Location & HoursAmbulatory surgery center at VCU Short Pump Pavilion. Monday‑Friday day‑shift hours – no holidays, no weekends, no call.
Job SummaryThe Surgical Technologist II (operating room scrub technician) sets up the sterile field, gathers supplies for surgical cases based on knowledge of instruments and equipment to be used, passes instruments to surgeons during surgery, and performs count procedures per policy during cases.
This role also serves as a resource and preceptor to less experienced Surgical Technologists and takes call for routine and high‑acuity cases after the orientation period. The role learns, performs, and completes assignments/responsibilities assigned during the transitional duty period.
Licensure & Certifications- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) – preferred
- Tech in Surgery‑Certified (TS‑C)
- Certified Operating Room and Surgical Technician (CORST)
Current AHA, BLS, and HCP Certification required.
Experience RequiredMinimum of two (2) years experience as a Surgical Technologist.
Education & Training Required- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program, a military training program, or a Licensed Practical Nursing Program
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program
- Functions under the direction of an RN or independent practitioner in providing direct patient care, emotional support, and problem solving in accordance with hospital, nursing, and unit policies and procedures.
- Requires prior approval or guidance from supervisor for time/schedule changes, legal issues, direct care deviations, and identification of educational resources.
- Handles, transports, accesses, and/or contacts medications and related supplies.
- Provides direct patient care and emotional support following hospital policies.
- Takes call for routine or high‑acuity cases after the orientation period.
Surgical Technologists work all three shifts, including weekends and holidays. Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with the employee's Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator. Schedules may be adjusted as necessary to meet staffing requirements.

Lifting 50–100 lbs., exposure to hazardous substances, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, bending, walking, climbing, reaching. - Mental/Sensory:
Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, logical thinking. - Emotional:
Fast‑paced environment, steady pace, ability to handle multiple priorities, intense customer interactions, noisy environment.
