Responsibilities

Consider joining the Virginia Department of Health as we foster healthy and resilient communities. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts. This is your opportunity to serve the public in a Business Unit serving the accounting needs for: the Office of Health Equity, the Office of Radiological Health, and the Office of Community Health Services.

These offices provide a dynamic workplace with a variety of needs and will keep the right candidate interested and engaged in a rewarding career.

The Accountant position performs professional level work of moderate difficulty requiring the application of accounting theory and principles. Characteristic duties develop methods of recording fiscal transactions, allocate funds, update and maintain accounting systems, independently prepare financial statements/reports/cost analyses, and develop and present budgets and other financial information for review. Other major duties: all functions of compensation accounting including assuring timely processing of payrolls, distribution of checks, preparing federal/state tax reporting, fringe benefits and premium conversion.

May supervise or lead fiscal paraprofessionals and/or other support personnel.

This is a restricted position, which is solely funded by the (IDC grant) for a period ending (June 30, 2027). The availability of funding is scheduled for review before the grant expiration date and periodically thereafter. Continued employment is contingent on the continued availability of funds.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices including cost accounting.
  • Knowledge of the use of data processing techniques in maintaining accounting records.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply and adapt established accounting methods to a variety of financial transactions and records and multiple funding streams.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and compile financial reports and statements.
