We are currently assisting a growing, private company in Richmond with its search for a

Controller .

This is a newly created position that will report to the Chief Operations Officer and work closely with the executive leadership team.

It will be responsible for overseeing all financial aspects of the business. This role will manage day-to-day finance and accounting activities, including budgeting, forecasting, invoicing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, tax compliance, and company asset tracking. The ideal candidate will be hands-on, detail-oriented, and comfortable owning the finance function in a small but growing company

Responsibilities:

Own the month-end and year-end financial close process

Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records in Quick Books

Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements

Monitor cash flow and ensure adequate liquidity to support operations

Lead the annual budgeting process and update rolling forecasts

Track and report on actuals vs. budget and provide analysis of key variances

Develop cash flow models and scenario planning tools to support decision-making

Generate and send client invoices in accordance with contract terms

Manage the timely review and payment of all company bills and vendor invoices

Reconcile semi-monthly payroll (with 401K contributions, flexible spending accounts, etc.)

Serve as the primary point of contact for external tax accountants to support preparation of quarterly and annual tax filings and related compliance documents

Qualifications:

7+ years of experience in accounting or finance, including 3+ years in a controller or finance lead role

CPA preferred

Proficiency in Quick Books Online or similar accounting platforms

Strong knowledge of GAAP and cash vs. accrual accounting
