Job Summary

At this time, Dominion Energy cannot transfer or sponsor a work visa or employment authorization for this position.

This role operates under the direct supervision of the Dominion Energy System Operating Center Operations Department and Training Center staff on a part-time basis. It serves as the starting point for a career in the Dominion Energy System Operations Center as a Bulk Electric System Operator. Selected students will begin their journey as Student Workers, engaging in various tasks that expose them to the roles and responsibilities within System Operations.

Upon graduating from high school, Student Workers will be promoted to Assistant System Operators. In this role, they will take on more advanced responsibilities, such as supporting real-time system operations and gaining hands-on experience with the equipment and technology used in the Operations Center. They will continue their education by enrolling in Bismarck State College to pursue an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Electrical Transmission Systems Technology, fully funded by Dominion Energy.

This educational program will provide them with a strong foundation in electrical transmission systems, preparing them for the technical demands of the job.

Additionally, Assistant System Operators will work towards obtaining their North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and PJM Interconnection certifications. These certifications are essential for becoming fully qualified Bulk Electric System Operators for Dominion Energy, as they demonstrate a high level of expertise and knowledge in the field. The certification process includes rigorous training and examinations, ensuring that operators are well-prepared to handle the complexities of the electrical grid.

This exciting opportunity begins with education and training to ensure Student Workers become accustomed to the processes and procedures utilized in the Dominion Energy System Operations Center. It equips them with the necessary skills to have a successful career as a Bulk Electric System Operator. Through this comprehensive program, students will develop a deep understanding of system operations, gain valuable hands-on experience, and build a strong professional network within Dominion Energy.

Responsibilities
  • Performs clerical and supplemental tasks to assist with Bulk Electric System operations.
  • Shadows Bulk Electric System Operators.
  • Works with training staff and uses computer-based training modules to learn basic electrical theory, NERC standards, PJM operational requirements, and Dominion-specific tasks.
  • Works to obtain NERC and PJM Certifications to become a certified Bulk Electric System Operator.
  • Works to obtain an AAS in Electrical Transmission Systems Technology.

With Certifications and AAS complete and as a Bulk Electric System Operator,

  • Works under direct supervision to take and/or direct timely and appropriate real-time actions to maintain the reliability of the Bulk Electric System, during both normal and emergency conditions.
  • Monitors elements of the Bulk Electric System and responds to status changes.
  • Responds to disturbances, emergency events and other changes in weather or system conditions and makes the appropriate internal and external notifications.
  • Monitors voltage and reactive power flows and utilizes reactive resources to maintain voltage schedules.
  • Prepares switching orders that will isolate work areas and provides a safe zone of protection for both field personnel and equipment.
  • Logs system activities for routine reporting to ensure the accuracy of operational records.

Education Requirements

Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 or 4.0/5.0.

Must provide 3 letters of recommendations.

  • One from your school, one demonstrating leadership and accountability (from a non-family member), and one of your choosing.

Must upload a copy of your unofficial high school transcript.
