Position Overview – Mechanical Design Engineer II

As a member of the Steam Power Services Inquiry to Remittance (ITR) engineering team in the Americas, you will contribute to service engineering activities including outage planning and execution, technical guidance to field engineers, leading complex repairs at sites or shops, root‑cause analysis on product and process issues, and design of steam turbine components. The role involves partnering with global rotating equipment steam turbine design teams to deliver safe, reliable, and quality‑focused product solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical guidance to field engineers and service managers during outage planning and execution of industrial, fossil, and nuclear steam turbines.
  • Lead complex repair projects for rotors, diaphragms, casings, valves, and other components.
  • Act as the single point of contact and technical interface for complex repair projects involving sales, customer service, project management, sourcing, engineering, and quality teams.
  • Ensure on‑time engineering deliverables and technical requirements for projects.
  • Serve as Project Engineering Manager to deliver steam turbine projects, including capital parts, upgrades, engineering studies, and valve solutions.
  • Participate in lean methodologies to maintain robust daily management, engineering deliverables, and continuous improvement, focusing on safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
  • Develop inspection and test plans for site assembly/disassembly and service‑center repair scope.
  • Lead and participate in product qualification processes for service shops, conducting design reviews and technical risk discussions internally and with customers.
  • Provide technical recommendations during outage planning to internal and external customers.
  • Offer guidance to parts engineering and sourcing teams on product design form, fit, and function.
  • Address product/process nonconformances and support implementation of corrective/preventative actions through root‑cause analysis.
  • Collaborate with sales, service directors, on‑site services, repair centers, field engineers, and parts engineering groups to provide technical direction.
  • Serve as a resource for less experienced colleagues, potentially leading small projects with low risk and resource requirements.
  • Travel domestically to customer sites (5‑10% of time).
Required Qualifications / Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of steam turbine service engineering experience.
  • Minimum of 2+ years of field execution experience, preferably in the power generation industry.
  • Catia CAD drafting experience is a bonus.
Desired Characteristics
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve problems, document, plan, market, and execute programs with established project‑management skills.
  • Good understanding of steam turbine and balance‑of‑plant systems and operations.
  • Knowledge of steam turbine rotating and stationary component inspection methods and repairs.
  • Experience with steam turbine disassembly, assembly, startups, and operational exposure.
  • Respectful, receptive, agile, and eager to learn.
