The following job summary represents the mid-level description (Fire Protection Engineer II) for this role. Required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience associated with each level is provided to clarify qualifications for each specific level.
This role is a specialty engineering position within the Corporate Risk Engineering team that performs risk and fire protection engineering. The engineer will be responsible for the specification, design review, construction review, commissioning, and ongoing support for all fire protection and loss control systems within the Company, including both capital projects and operating units. The role encompasses specialty engineering in industrial / high hazard occupancies including offshore, battery energy storage systems (BESS), solar, petrochemical / LNG, power generation, as well as traditional storage / commercial occupancies.
The engineer will be knowledgeable in fire alarm and suppression, with an emphasis on special hazards system typically found in energy facilities. The role also leads other specialized risk engineering programs such as Company’s process safety program, jurisdictional boiler / pressure vessel inspection program, and Public Safety Education program.
As part of this role, the engineer will lead the external risk engineering inspections and surveys (both property and boiler / machinery) as well as conduct their own internal risk engineering surveys. The engineer will then scope and lead risk improvement projects that satisfy the recommendations from those surveys as well as internal risk engineering standards. The engineer will be embedded as a critical member of various project teams as the technical fire protection and risk engineering lead for complex projects, such as new generating, petrochemical / LNG, or renewable energy facilities.
They will be expected to provide subject matter expertise that is critical for the execution of the project, and that may have significant impacts to the viability or constructability of the asset.
The engineer will provide technical direction and specification to outside designers and engineering technologists for the design of the company’s fire protection and risk management systems. They will also review the technical work products produced by those entities for compliance with building and fire codes as well as internal standards and provide approval for installation. Once the systems are constructed, the engineer will review the installed system for compliance with internal and external specifications, lead system commissioning, and ultimately accept the system on behalf of the Company.
This role is fully competent in all conventional aspects of risk / fire protection engineering. Second level position in the risk / fire protection engineering series provides engineering support and is distinguished from Risk / Fire Protection Engineer I by increased complexity in application of engineering skills required.

A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications):
- 0-2 years of experience in fire protection engineering. The candidate must possess (or will possess by June 2026) an ABET accredited engineering degree specifically in fire protection engineering or possess a current or expired P.E. in fire protection engineering.
- 3+ years of experience in fire protection engineering. The candidate must possess an ABET accredited engineering degree specifically in fire protection engineering or possess a current or expired P.E. in fire protection engineering.
Note:
A Master’s degree will count as one year towards the experience requirement. - 5+ years of experience in fire protection engineering.
