Who we are looking for

This position is responsible for driving the vision, strategy and execution of engineering initiatives that support and advance our business goals. It plays a key part in defining the technical direction of the firm while cultivating a culture of innovation, technical excellence, and continuous improvement. You will collaborate closely with cross‑functional leaders and project teams to establish and reinforce engineering best practices, elevate team performance, and ensure successful delivery of high‑quality, technically sound work.

What you’ll be doing
  • Develop and implement engineering strategies, policies, and procedures that align with company objectives.
  • Serve as technical expert by providing advice, counsel and peer review to ensure technical appropriateness and accuracy.
  • Lead the development, refinement and implementation of company‑wide proposal and report standards and best practices.
  • Develop and implement training and educational programs required to keep the company at the leading edge of technology and in compliance with industry standards and quality.
  • Formulate, recommend and implement policies and procedures to improve operations.
  • Maintain knowledge of new technology, standards and codes.
  • Meet with branch operations staff and corporate leadership to coordinate activities and initiatives, and provide oversight of staff mentoring and professional growth.
  • Work with branch and corporate staff to lead, mentor and inspire a diverse team of engineers and related disciplines, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and objectives.
  • Ensure high standards of quality and professional practice across all engineering deliverables and reports.
  • Coordinate with executive leadership to define and execute the firm’s strategy, resource planning and long‑term growth initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.
What you need to have
  • Master’s degree or higher in a related engineering field.
  • 15 years of related engineering experience.
  • Professional engineering licensure in VA, DC, MD, NC, and SC or ability to obtain licensure within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to multi‑task and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and within cross‑functional teams to achieve goals.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Willingness to participate in and pass F&R’s pre‑employment screening, including background investigation, drug screening and driving record.
  • Primary work in a professional office environment with frequent collaboration across corporate, branch and field operations.
  • Periodic travel to project sites, laboratories and client offices for technical oversight, leadership and quality assurance.
  • Field visits may involve exposure to outdoor weather conditions, active construction sites, uneven terrain, loud noise and other typical job‑site hazards.
  • Use of computers, phones and presentation tools is routine.
  • Standard business hours but occasional evening or weekend availability may be required.
  • Regular activities include sitting, standing, talking, hearing, walking through field environments, climbing stairs or embankments and lifting or moving up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to drive to and from work sites and possession of a valid driver’s license with a good‑standing driving record.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required when visiting job sites or laboratories.
  • Ability to travel periodically to other offices with some overnight stays required.
