SUMMER CAMP EDUCATOR

Maymont is a 100-acre historic estate and park, located in Richmond, Virginia, with many unique experiences for all to enjoy, including the historic Maymont Mansion, The Robins Nature Center, arboretum, formal gardens, and habitats for native Virginia wildlife and farm animals. Since 1975, Maymont has been maintained and operated by the nonprofit Maymont Foundation, committed to creating experiences that delight, educate and inspire its guests.

The Maymont Foundation is seeking a Summer Camp Educator to support the implementation of a wide variety of programming, including environmental, historical and other learning experiences throughout the grounds. Candidates must have weekday availability between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM. This is a part-time seasonal position from May 18th, 2026 to August 14th, 2026. This position will work daily scheduled shifts including both half and full day camps.

This position works under the guidance and supervision of the Manager of Education.

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborate with education team to deliver energetic programming
  • Work with educators to prepare for lessons and activities, including organizing and readying of materials
  • Lead participant groups in all activities and monitor engagement and enjoyment to ensure positive experiences
  • Provide supervision to program participants ensuring their safety and well-being
  • Know and understand safety and emergency procedures associated with programming to be able to identify and respond to needs and concerns
  • Assist education team with maintaining program areas to ensure they are tidy, clean and organized
  • Support Maymont community and fundraising events, which may occur outside normal work schedule
  • Assist with other duties and tasks as assigned

Education and Experience:

  • Must be 18+ years of age
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Active college student majoring in education, science, environmental studies, history or related field, preferred
  • Demonstrated experience working with children in education setting

Competencies:

  • Energetic and outgoing with a genuine appreciation of working with children
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and comfort speaking and presenting in front of groups
  • Ability to deliver high-quality, engaging instruction in both one-on-one and group situations
  • Ability to work independently and on a team with little supervision
  • Willingness to learn program content areas
  • Enthusiasm for Maymont and the goals of its programming and educational experiences
  • Willingness to complete provided First Aid/CPR training
  • Experience with or willingness to learn handling of tier 1 education animals including insects and turtles
  • Ability to pass a background check

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking and talking for extended periods
  • Frequent climbing, bending, stooping and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work inside and outside in all weather conditions
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus

FLSA Status:
Part-Time, Hourly
