Job DutiesThis position coordinates undergraduate and graduate internship program at the Library of Virginia.
- In consultation with Library of Virginia departmental leadership determines their internship needs and identifies the staff member that will serve as the intern’s direct supervisor.
- Coordinates outreach for the recruitment of undergraduate and graduate students from Virginia academic institutions for paid and academic credit internships.
- Works with intern supervisors to vet applications, which might include phone, virtual, or in-person interviews, and match candidates with the appropriate unit.
- With intern supervisors identifies the projects the intern will undertake or tasks to be performed; defines internship goals the intern will achieve or deliverables the intern will produce; and coordinates final assessment.
- Works with intern supervisors, IT, Facilities, and Shared Services (if a paid internship) to coordinate a workspace, orientation process, , building access, and Biblioteca computer accounts.
- Weekly check-in with intern supervisors and interns to ensure neither has questions or concerns and that the intern is making progress towards identified goals and deliverables. Resolves any issues or problems that might arise.
- Coordinates any programming related to the internship, such as virtual or in-person talks by the intern.
- Works with the academic institution, Facilities, IT, Shared Services, and intern supervisor to ensure that all paperwork is completed in a timely manner, which might include, but not limited to: university forms, Commonwealth of Virginia background check, mid‑term evaluation report, and final evaluation report.
- Professional experience in the administration of programs in a library, school, museum, or similar organization required.
- Experience in library, scholarly, or community programming, particularly in collaborative teams for events and visiting groups is desirable.
- Knowledge of Virginia & US history and government.
- Knowledge and experience using social media in a library, school, museum, or similar organization.
- Excellent listening, networking, and communication skills.
- Strong technology skills.
- Ability to thrive within a fast‑paced environment and adapt to change.
- Excellent program coordination and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems, to plan effectively, and to communicate both orally and in writing with supervisors and other staff members.
- Ability to handle day‑to‑day office details while also planning programs several years in advance.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and carry out projects and direct the work of others.
- Must have a valid Virginia driver’s license or ability to obtain one prior to employment.
Considerable knowledge of history, public history, library science, museum studies, or related field preferred.
