The position is an Emergency/Essential Personnel open with no telework options currently available. The portion of the job may change based on business needs.
Position OverviewVirginia Peninsula Community College is a two‑year institution of higher education that serves residents of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York. The college seeks faculty to teach up to 12 credit hours in the fall and spring semesters and up to 8 credit hours during the summer semester. Teaching load is based on student enrollment and staffing needs.
Adjunct faculty appointments are in a standing pool and provide no guarantee of continued employment.
Adjunct faculty will teach automotive classes, including:
- Introduction to Automotive Systems
- Automotive Engines I
- Anti‑Pollution Systems
- Auto Fuel and Ignition Systems
- Auto Power Trains I
- Introduction to Alternative Fuels
- Hybrid Vehicles
- Automotive Climate Control
- Design and delivery of instruction for day and evening classes.
- Responsible for student assessment and grading.
- Maintain adequate on‑campus presence.
- Provide timely communication with students, staff and administrators.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned, including assisting the agency or state government during an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA’s /Required Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in Automotive Technology.
- Current ASE Master Certified Automobile (Al‑A8).
- Previous work experience in the automotive repair field.
- Passion for the discipline and commitment to a student‑centered philosophy supporting academic excellence for diverse learners.
- Excellent interpersonal skills in communication with students, colleagues, staff and administrators, individually or as part of a team.
- Willingness to serve traditional and non‑traditional students from a variety of backgrounds and age groups.
- Ability to modify instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs.
- Plan and organize instruction that maximizes documented student learning.
- Adopt fair methods to measure student progress toward learning outcomes.
- Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently, returning student work promptly to promote maximum learning.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grade rosters to the division administrator each semester according to established deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience and/or strong interest in teaching and inspiring adult learners to fulfill the college’s mission to change lives and empower students to succeed.
- Current ASE L1 and/or L3 certifications.
- Previous experience in automotive instruction or community‑college teaching.
- Experience in online/hybrid and traditional face‑to‑face classroom modalities.
