The Steward School seeks an enthusiastic and committed Upper School Social Studies Teacher for the academic year . This is a full‑time, benefitted faculty position reporting to the Director of Upper School.

Responsibilities
  • This position will teach five sections of a variety of Upper School Social Studies courses, likely to include:
    Exploration of Global Issues, Government, and Economics. In addition, faculty are expected to contribute to department initiatives and serve as an advisor.
  • The preferred candidate will:
    • Build productive relationships with students and provide an empowering student‑centered learning environment that is equitable, inclusive, respectful, and supportive.
    • Plan and deliver creative and effective instruction that develops critical thinking skills.
    • Utilize technology to facilitate instruction.
    • Collaborate effectively with colleagues.
    • Post and maintain curriculum, syllabi, and grades.
    • Demonstrate familiarity with differentiated learning instruction.
  • The position includes other duties as assigned by the Director of Upper School.

  • Foster an inclusive classroom by teaching history from multiple perspectives and diverse sources, demonstrating a commitment to civil discourse and culturally responsive methods.
  • Prioritize a skills‑based approach, emphasizing analytical writing, argumentation, research, critical thinking, and presentation skills. Use appropriate scaffolding and differentiation to meet the needs of all learners.
  • Embrace flexibility in teaching methods and subject matter. Effectively balance independent initiative with collaborative work within and beyond the department.
  • Help students become global citizens by actively engaging them with local, national, and global current events, connecting the past to the present. Incorporate historical lessons to teach civic engagement, democratic values, empathy, and reflection.
  • Build strong, trusting, and professional relationships with students.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree and major concentration in History and/or Education is required.
  • The preferred candidate will have:
    • Master’s degree and/or Commonwealth of Virginia certification.
    • Relevant classroom experience, including Upper School History and Economics.
    • Technological proficiency in the classroom includes Google Educational apps, interactive whiteboards, and learning management systems.
    • Growth mindset and willingness to pursue ongoing professional development.
    • Experience with coaching and/or club sponsorship.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
