Upper School Mathematics Teacher The Hunter School
The Upper School Mathematics Teacher (Upper School teachers are called “tutors” at the Hunter School) serves as a master instructor and mentor in the study of mathematics within a classical Christian framework. This teacher instructs students in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus, cultivating precision of thought, logical reasoning, intellectual virtue, and wonder at the order of God’s creation. The position requires both academic rigor and spiritual maturity.
The teacher must be capable of presenting mathematics not merely as a technical discipline, but as a coherent, rational system reflecting the intelligibility and beauty of a universe created and sustained by Christ.

- Teach upper school mathematics courses including:
- Algebra I & II
- Euclidean and Analytical Geometry
- Trigonometry
- Pre-Calculus
- Calculus (as assigned)
- Present mathematics as an ordered discipline rooted in logical coherence.
- Employ classical pedagogy appropriate to the Logic and Rhetoric stages.
- Emphasize proof-writing, deductive reasoning, and conceptual mastery.
- Integrate historical development of mathematics where appropriate (e.g., Euclid, Descartes, Newton).
- Maintain high academic standards and prepare students for college-level mathematics.
- Articulate how mathematics reflects the order, consistency, and rationality of God’s creation.
- Model intellectual humility and delight in truth.
- Encourage habits of precision, perseverance, and honesty in problem-solving.
- Lead class in prayer as appropriate and support chapel culture.
- Design assessments that test conceptual understanding, not merely procedural skill.
- Provide timely feedback to students and parents.
- Maintain accurate grade records and progress reports.
- Offer extra help sessions as needed.
- Serve as an advisor to a group of upper school students (if assigned).
- Participate in student life, house systems, and leadership programs.
- Model Christ-like character and professional conduct.
- Pursue growth in both mathematical content knowledge and classical pedagogy.
- Work toward or maintain ACCS certification.
- Participate in faculty development days, retreats, and curriculum planning.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or related field (Mathematics strongly preferred).
- Demonstrated mastery of Algebra through Calculus.
- Affirms the school’s statement of faith and other covenants.
- Commitment to classical Christian education.
- Master’s degree in Mathematics or Mathematics Education.
- Experience teaching proof-based geometry.
- Experience in classical Christian or liberal arts education.
- Strong deductive reasoning and clarity of explanation
- Ability to teach proof-writing and abstract reasoning
- Classroom management grounded in order and respect
- Clear, confident communication
- Intellectual curiosity and love of learning
- Commitment to academic excellence
- Students develop logical reasoning and disciplined habits of thought.
- Geometry students can construct and defend formal proofs.
- Algebra and Calculus students demonstrate conceptual mastery.
