Department Summary

The Department of Gerontology, founded in 1976, became a part of the College of Health Professions at Virginia Commonwealth University in January 1985. The department is well‑known for the quality and innovation of its programs and for the scholarship and applied expertise of its faculty. The Department of Gerontology offers a variety of degree programs based on an interdisciplinary approach using the bio‑psycho‑social model.

With a mission of promoting optimal aging for individuals and communities, Gerontology graduates further the person‑centered mission of the department largely in the areas of administration, education, advocacy, and entrepreneurship. The Gerontology Department envisions continued commitment to service, scholarship, and education, with a focus on the Disrupt Ageism and Elderhood Development paradigms.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Meet all designated course instruction guidelines.
  • Plan course content based on specific knowledge and expertise in gerontology. Topics may include, but are not limited to: trauma‑informed care, end‑of‑life, spirituality and aging, or financial management.
  • Design and develop course content, syllabus, learning objectives, and assignments.
  • Facilitate course engagement and student assessment.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Qualifications:

    Masters degree in gerontology or related field.
  • Subject matter expertise in the topic and subject of the course being taught.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as an adjunct faculty member at VCU.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

    Membership in gerontology professional organizations.
Salary Range

$1,500 per credit hour
