Overview

Academic Advisor (G3) role located at Reynolds Community College. The position is full time, exempt, with responsibilities in academic advising, student success, and collaboration across college departments. The Advisor will work in both in-person and virtual settings to support prospective and currently enrolled students in identifying academic and workforce pathways that align with their interests, strengths, and career goals. The role is part of the student success team and serves a diverse student population reflective of Virginia’s communities.

Reynolds is one of the largest community colleges in Virginia and serves Virginia’s capital city and five nearby counties. The college’s four campus sites serve approximately 13,000 credit students and provide training for 7,400 students through the Community College Workforce Alliance. Reynolds is committed to hiring and retaining a diverse, culturally competent staff and to investing in faculty and staff development to serve a full range of students.

Responsibilities
  • Provide academic and career advising to prospective and current students across academic and workforce programs
  • Guide students in developing educational plans that align with career goals and program requirements
  • Identify and address non-academic barriers that may impact student success
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of student interactions, outreach efforts, and progress
  • Refer students to appropriate college and community-based support services
  • Implement academic interventions and follow up on students at risk of not meeting academic goals
  • Leverage advising tools and student information systems to deliver responsive, data-informed support
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in advising
  • Promote a culture of inclusion and equity in alignment with Reynolds’ Flight Path initiatives
  • Support college-wide retention and completion efforts by collaborating with faculty, staff, and student services teams

Success in this role requires a strong understanding of barriers that can impact educational attainment and a deep commitment to helping students overcome those challenges and reach their goals.

Qualifications

KSA's / Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Strong understanding of academic programs, degree requirements, and enrollment services within a higher education setting
  • Ability to apply student development theory to support academic and personal growth
  • Proficient in interpreting and communicating institutional policies and procedures
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and work effectively both independently and in team settings
  • Skilled in using technology and student information systems to track and manage student progress
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and commitment to fostering an inclusive, student-centered environment

Additional Considerations

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with coursework in counseling or a related field
  • Experience working with diverse individuals in an advisory or counseling capacity
  • Experience working in a college or higher education environment

Special Assignments
