Overview

Join Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) as a dedicated advisor for the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program. You will provide personalized academic and transfer advising to participants in this federally funded program, helping first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities achieve their educational goals and build confidence for success beyond the classroom. The Advisor for the SSS Program provides comprehensive academic advising, personal guidance, and transfer support to participants in this program.

The SSS program aims to increase student success, retention, graduation, and transfer rates among eligible students.

This is a RESTRICTED
, classified position funded through the U.S. Department of Education’s TRIO SSS program. Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of federal funds. The current TRIO SSS grant period is September 25, 2025, through September 24, 2030; however, this is not a guaranteed time frame.

Responsibilities
  • Provide proactive, holistic academic advising and case management for an assigned caseload of SSS participants.
  • Assist students in understanding program requirements, selecting courses, and developing individualized academic, personal, and transfer plans.
  • Conduct regular check-ins and progress reviews to monitor student achievement and persistence toward graduation or transfer.
  • Facilitate workshops and group sessions focused on study skills, time management, financial literacy, career exploration, and other student success topics.
  • Support SSS-eligible students in exploring transfer opportunities and navigating the admissions process for four-year institutions.
  • Provide information and assistance regarding financial aid, scholarships, and other resources to address financial barriers to education.
  • Collaborate with faculty, advisors, accessibility services, financial aid, and other college departments to coordinate comprehensive support for participants.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential case management records, documenting all services, contacts, and outcomes in accordance with FERPA and TRIO program requirements.
  • Utilize data management systems (e.g., People Soft, Navigate, CRM/ERP) to track participant progress and generate reports for program evaluation and compliance.
  • Participate in program meetings, professional development, and required TRIO or Department of Education trainings.
  • Assist in program outreach, recruitment, and student engagement activities.
  • Contribute to the development of institutional practices that promote equitable access, student persistence, and degree completion.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission of SVCC and the goals of the TRIO SSS program.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Student Development, or a closely related field; or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
  • Demonstrated recent professional experience providing academic advising or related student support services, preferably within a TRIO SSS Project or comparable federally funded program.
  • Demonstrated recent experience working with first-generation, low-income, or students with disabilities.
  • Ability to provide academic and transfer advising using a holistic, student-centered approach.
  • Experience developing and facilitating workshops on academic and personal success topics (e.g., study skills, time management, financial literacy, career planning).
  • Familiarity with financial aid processes, scholarships, and student financial resources.
  • Skill in assisting students with setting and achieving academic and personal goals.
  • Proficiency in utilizing data management systems to track student progress, assess outcomes, and support continuous improvement.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and sensitivity to the diverse needs of students.
  • Ability to use independent judgment, multitask, and work effectively under deadlines.
