Job Description: NOVA Workforce Adjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in the designated discipline/field of study to students from a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences. Teaching may include a variety of formats: face-to-face, remote, and online. The teaching load is based on student enrollment and staffing needs. The adjunct faculty contract contains no expectation or guarantees of continued employment.

Duties and Tasks

  • Provide hands-on, guided, differentiated instructions to students enrolled in the courses, as specified in the schedule and course contract.
  • Prepare course materials and lesson plans.
  • Conduct efficient and effective classroom management.
  • Provide students with an approved syllabus that includes course objectives and learning outcomes, teaching methodology, attendance policies, assignments and deliverables, timelines, and evaluation criteria.
  • Use the institution’s learning management system to post syllabus, assignments, and other materials and to communicate with students in a timely manner.
  • Deliver course content using a variety of teaching styles and provide engaging assignments that demonstrate real-world applications of concepts covered.
  • Maintain records of enrollment and attendance, assessments and grades, and submit class rosters and grade sheets by deadlines established by the department.
  • Maintain a hazard-free environment and practice safety in lab(s) or classroom.
  • Adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with college and departmental policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • As part of the primary responsibility to provide quality instruction, the College expects each faculty member to meet assigned classes regularly, submit required records and reports routinely, teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts, and adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations.

Special Assignments: May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSAs / Required Qualifications

  • Plumbing Theory and Principles – Comprehensive understanding of water distribution, drainage, venting, and waste systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Codes and Regulations
  • Working knowledge of local, state, and national plumbing codes (e.g., UPC, IPC, Virginia Plumbing Code)
  • Safety Regulations:
    Knowledge of OSHA 10/30, lockout/tagout, confined space safety, and PPE requirements for plumbing environments
  • Hands-On Demonstration – Ability to demonstrate plumbing installations, soldering, and mechanical joining techniques in a classroom or lab
  • Instructional Delivery – Ability to teach hands-on technical content clearly and effectively to diverse learners
  • Fixture Installation – Understanding proper installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing fixtures
  • Curriculum Integration – Skill in aligning instructional content with industry standards and certification requirements
  • Pipe fitting and Installation – Skilled in cutting, threading, bending, and joining pipe materials safely and accurately
  • Represent NOVA Professionally – Ability to uphold institutional standards and positively represent NOVA Workforce

Minimum Work Experience

  • Prior teaching or training experience in the subject field/industry or demonstrate potential to teach
