Position Summary

Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.

The Full-time Welding Instructor will provide high-quality instruction for all current and future VPCC welding courses. This position supports course content reviews and revisions, helps ensure instructional consistency and quality across all courses and instructors, assists with inventory monitoring and the associated procurement process, and engages with employer partners to better understand their needs.

Responsibilities
  • This is a full-time restricted classified position. Continuation of employment is based on funding availability.
  • Special assignments may be required to perform other duties as assigned.
  • May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Qualifications
  • Extensive experience using SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW welding processes.
  • Some experience as a pipe welder.
  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching or training in a professional or academic setting.
  • Extensive relevant work experience as a welder or as a Welding Instructor.
  • Any AWS Certification or the ability to earn it in the first 30 days of employment.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of fillet welds in all positions using SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW.
  • Knowledge of groove welds with backing plate using SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, GTAW.
  • Knowledge of groove welds without backing plate using SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, GTAW.
  • Knowledge of open-root pipe using SMAW and GTAW.
  • Knowledge of setup and operation of oxyacetylene welding and cutting and plasma cutting equipment.
  • Knowledge of weld joint geometry and welding terminology.
  • Knowledge of basic welding drawings and welding symbols.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices in the welding field.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated teaching and educational facilitation skills.
Skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and work with individuals at all levels.
