ENGLISH TEACHER  FULL-TIME CERTIFIED POSITION

10-MONTH POSITION (200 DAYS) Starting August 13, 2026 + 2-Day Orientation on August 11 & 12

Maggie L. Walker Governor's School for Government and International Studies is a regional magnet program for gifted high school students seeking a full-time English teacher starting with the  school year. Teachers at MLWGS plan, organize, and implement appropriate instruction for a gifted program that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. Candidates must demonstrate expertise and knowledge in both content and contemporary instructional practices in the English classroom.

QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor's degree in English is required; a master's degree is preferred.

Virginia Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in English is required; additional experience in World Literature, AP Literature, AP Language, or Drama preferred. Thorough knowledge of the advanced high school English curriculum and pedagogy is required.

Virginia endorsement in gifted education preferred; will be expected to have or to complete the gifted endorsement within four years of hiring.

Prior teaching experience with gifted adolescents preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Effectively organize and teach courses in high school English following established curricula.

Evaluate and report student performance and progress.

Maintain current course syllabi and provide a concomitant student guide for each course taught.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Plans and implements a program of instruction that adheres to the school philosophy, goals, and objectives as outlined in the adopted course study.

• Makes purposeful and appropriate lesson plans that provide for effective teaching strategies and maximize time on task.

• Plans and implements a program of study designed to meet the individual needs of students.

• Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning by employing a variety of appropriate teaching strategies.

• Encourages student enthusiasm for the learning process and the development of good study habits.

• Provides progress and interim reports as required.

• Prepares substitute folder containing appropriate information as required by the Executive Director and/or his/her designee.

• Plans and prescribes purposeful assignments for tutors as needed.

• Recognizes learning problems and makes referrals as appropriate.

• Demonstrates a strong grasp of the subject matter.

• Uses effective oral and written expression.

• Become acquainted with supplemental services beneficial to students as an extension of regular classroom activities.

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT

• Keeps current in subject matter knowledge and learning theory and is willing to share this knowledge for continual improvement of the school's curriculum.

• Assists on the ongoing curriculum process, including the revision of written courses of study.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

• Develops, in accordance with school guidelines, reasonable rules of classroom behavior and appropriate techniques that are consistently applied.

• Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

• If applicable, submits requisitions for the Executive Director's approval for purchases of materials and equipment to support the program.

• Provides for the supervision of assigned students when circumstances require a brief absence from the assignment.

PUBLIC RELATIONS

• Upholds and enforces board policy, administrative procedures, and school rules and regulations, and is supportive of them to the public.

• Maintains appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance and appropriate use of conference and planning time.

• Strives to communicate the positive aspects of our school program to the public in word and deed.

• Works cooperatively with parents to strengthen the education program for their children.

• Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with other staff members.
