About The Margaret R. & Robert M. Freeman Library and Special Collections Department

The Margaret R. & Robert M. Freeman Library and Special Collections Department exists to provide research services to museum staff and the public in support of the museum’s educational mission. The department acquires research materials and primary resources related to VMFA’s art collections and manages information about those resources for internal and external stakeholders.

General Information

We are currently seeking applications for organized and detail-oriented individuals to join The Margaret R. & Robert M. Freeman Library and Special Collections Department as a Cataloging Librarian
.

This position plays an important role in supporting the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ educational mission by helping ensure library materials are easy to discover, access, and enjoy. Working with both physical and digital resources, the role focuses on organizing and preparing library materials so they are ready for use by museum staff, researchers, and the public. Responsibilities include creating clear and accurate records, supporting digitization efforts, and maintaining collection information across library systems.

The position also helps prepare materials for public use through hands‑on processing such as labeling and protective housing, participates in inventory and quality‑control projects, and supports materials related to Rights and Reproductions. Additional duties may be assigned as part of a collaborative library team.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Recent experience applying AACR2/RDA and MARC 21 cataloging standards, Library of Congress Classification (LCCN), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and Name Authorities (LCNA), OCLC Connexion, Integrated Library Systems/Library Management Systems, and LC Subject and Name Authority records.
  • Ability to interpret and apply local cataloging policy standards.
  • Ability to use library management system (LMS) functions used in carrying out job duties and understanding of how other library systems and modules relate and interact with the LMS.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret cataloging records and policy and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information, respond to questions, and provide staff with requests.
  • Ability to apply active listening skills.
  • General Knowledge of PC software and hardware required including e-mail, spreadsheet, and word processing software.
  • Ability to operate in a network environment and use internet and electronic resources.
