Duties & Responsibilities:
Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking an Academic Advisor to join the School of Nursing, reporting to the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Advising. The Academic Advisor supports the mission of VCU School of Nursing by providing academic advising and student support services to undergraduate nursing students. This position assists with recruitment and plays an integral role in retention efforts, promoting student success, and timely graduation.
The advisor provides academic guidance and assistance to undergraduate students from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds by utilizing professional advising techniques and interventions to enhance student success. This includes, but is not limited to: maintaining accurate and confidential records for enrollment management and reporting purposes; helping students to navigate the college experience, and assume responsibility for their academic success; apply FERPA, Title IX and other policies and procedures when appropriate;
accurately communicate the school’s academic programs, courses and support services via telephone, online or in‑person; and plan and facilitate group advising sessions, workshops, and information sessions, etc. This position coordinates a variety of curricular/co‑curricular programming to enhance student learning, success and progression.
- Provide guidance and direction to students concerning academic matters and factors affecting academic performance in order to facilitate success in the program.
- Work with students, faculty, and other stakeholders from the point of admission through graduation to ensure academic success.
- Is accountable for undergraduate students’ plans of study and files; monitors student progress through the program; maintains continuous contact with assigned students in order to provide information and guidance; ensures that students have necessary information to be certified for graduation in a timely manner.
- Develop, interpret, document, implement, assess, and apply School of Nursing, University and State policies and procedures to ensure the most efficient and effective delivery of student support services.
- Guide students through appeals processes with minimal support from leadership, including (but not limited to) Financial Aid (SAP) Appeals, Academic Regulations (ARAC) Appeals, and Grade Appeals.
- Knowledgeable about academic programs, policies, procedures, and student support services within the scope of responsibilities.
- Support departmental and University retention and enrollment initiatives.
- Work with other support services at VCU to facilitate advisement, student progression, and development.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of student information, including advising interactions.
- Assist with recruitment, onboarding, and coordination of other activities to facilitate student advising, progression and success.
- Provide excellent customer service to students, faculty, SON leadership and other constituents.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in counseling, student personnel, higher education administration, or related field, or equivalent training and experience
- Minimum 1 year of full‑time advising experience working directly with students
- Demonstrated experience working collaboratively, as well as autonomously
- Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication skills.
- Must be detail‑oriented with strong organizational skills.
- Strong computer skills with proficiency in MS Office Suite and Google’s cloud collaboration services.
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
- Familiarity with the mission of an urban‑research university and experience working with a diverse student population
