Mission or Goal of Unit:VCU Medical Center is a largely underserved Level 1 Trauma Center and tertiary referral center, serving over 100,000 patients per year. The department is nationally recognized for innovative management of chest pain, stroke, major trauma, EMS medical management, and aeromedical transport. The Virginia Poison Center is a division component of this department. The VCU Department of Emergency Medicine also provides coverage for a free‑standing Emergency Department serving the rural patient community of New Kent, VA (15,000 patients per year) and community hospitals in Tappahannock, VA and South Hill, VA (20,000–25,000 patients per year).
The department houses a three‑year residency program and partners with the Air Force to train residents, among the only 12 programs to offer a combined Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine residency with an additional two residents per year. Faculty may be recruited as Assistant, Associate, or full Professor based on experience.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join our dynamic academic Emergency Medicine team. The candidate will contribute to our mission of providing exceptional patient care, innovative research, and high‑quality education. This position supports the department mission by providing clinical experience in Emergency Medicine through residency training and/or Board Certification.
Position Responsibilities:- Clinical – Provide direct patient care within the emergency department, supervising all trainees, non‑licensed providers, and non‑physician credentialed providers. Clinical obligations will be individualized. Deliver efficient, high‑quality patient care, document encounters in timely, comprehensive notes, and fulfill billing and coding responsibilities. Abide by departmental policies, hospital rules, Medical Staff Bylaws, and MCVH procedures. Provide coverage for uncovered shifts as needed.
- Teaching – Deliver core curriculum lectures to medical students, interns, and resident trainees. Participate in ACLS, PALS, and ATLS courses. Provide bedside clinical teaching to all trainees and participate in nursing, house staff, medical student, advanced practice provider, and paramedical education programs.
- Research – Actively identify areas of interest and participate in departmental research projects.
- Administrative – Attend department staff meetings unless on clinical duty; participate in quality improvement and utilization review activities; engage in marketing and public relations activities; serve on relevant medical staff and hospital committees; respond promptly to reports and information requests; represent VCU Health System as required. Assignments may span the full spectrum of healthcare or focus on a specific area of interest.
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine
- Active Virginia medical license or ability to obtain
- Completion of an Emergency Medicine residency within 3 years (if beyond 3 years, must have completed 1500 hours of clinical activity in the past 3 years in an Emergency Department of comparable size, volume, and acuity; waiver at Chair discretion)
- Demonstrated ability to foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility among faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and commit to doing so as a VCU faculty member.
