- Assist the dentist in patient care and maintain office operations.
- Prepare exam rooms, sterilize instruments, and educate patients on oral hygiene.
- Take vital signs, assist with X‑rays under supervision, and ensure patient comfort during procedures.
- Pass instruments, suction fluids, and support the dentist throughout procedures.
- Perform four‑handed dentistry principles and coordinate front‑desk activities.
- Make and receive telephone calls regarding dental services.
- Schedule appointments and manage recall systems.
- Maintain inventory, supplies, and material safety data sheets.
- Adhere to infection control and biohazard protocols, including instrument sterilization.
- Input and manage patient records using electronic dental office software.
- Support laboratory case records and participate in expanded duties as delegated by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Knowledge and skills in four‑handed dentistry principles.
- Experience with dental office practice management procedures.
- Proficiency with basic computer software (Microsoft Office) and dental electronic software.
- Ability to expose diagnostic X‑rays.
- Understanding of legal and ethical aspects of clinical practice.
- Knowledge of OSHA and HIPAA regulations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Training in dental assisting.
- Certification in X‑ray use.
- Current CPR certification from the American Heart Association.
- Current immunization record (tetanus, HEP‑B, etc.) or documented immunity.
- Current TB testing or chest X‑ray.
- Certified Dental Assisting credential from the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc.
- Graduate from an accredited dental assisting program by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation.
- Experience in dental assisting and/or dental office management related to quality assurance, inventory control of patient records, and recare systems.
- Experience in dental health care management in an educational setting.
