The Desk Coordinator works within the Facilities and Operations team to foster a residential environment that fulfills the goals and vision of the Department of Residential Life & Housing Mission to provide safe, inclusive, and well-maintained facilities that build intentional communities to empower residents in their academic excellence, citizenship, and personal growth. The Desk Coordinator is a full-time, professional who will serve as part of the Facilities and Operations team responsible for the daily management of over 6,000 on-campus students.
The position will report to the Coordinator of Desk Operations.

Duties & Responsibilities- To serve as an Information Desk shift supervisor and assist the Residential Life & Housing Coordinator of Desk Operations with daily oversight of the operations of information desks.
- Enforce policy and procedures among employees
- Responsible for the management of staff at residence hall locations.
- Train, supervise, and evaluate all hourly undergraduate and graduate Desk Assistant staff.
- Collaborate with university staff during crises; respond to emergencies to support students and housing operations during weather-related or scheduled university closures, campus-wide disruptions, health concerns, pandemics, etc.
- Assist in managing the administrative functions of residence hall information desks across campus, including staff scheduling.
- Provide leadership in promoting an atmosphere within the residential community that fosters responsible decision-making among the Desk Assistants.
- Shifts range from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. to Midnight for five shifts per week (including weekends).
- Effective management skills.
- Effective communication skills (oral and written).
- Crisis management experience.
- Ability to work collaboratively.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work well under pressure with multiple and changing deadlines.
- Demonstrated proficiency utilizing technology such as scheduling systems, web applications, online systems, database software, and standard office packages (word processing, spreadsheet, electronic mail).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, manage several responsibilities at the same time, and resolve problems using initiative and sound judgment.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
- Experience in a Higher Education Setting.
- Previous Residence Life experience.
- Experience collaborating with Res Life and VCUPD.
- Experience with Access Control;
Supervision experience.
