Assistant Controller – Empower Brands

Empower Brands is seeking an Assistant Controller to oversee the day‑to‑day functions of the General Ledger and Accounts Payable teams. Reporting directly to the Corporate Controller, you will ensure effective and efficient execution of critical processes, maintain compliance with US GAAP, and uphold a strong control environment.

You will also serve as the strategic bridge between the Controller and functional department teams, contributing to overall financial management and success of the company.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee a team of 4 direct reports and 18 total associates, including hiring, performance reviews and supervision to ensure optimal performance and professional growth.
  • Own the month‑end close process, managing all finance and accounting aspects related to revenue recognition, leases, fixed assets, debt, bad‑debt reserves, intercompany accounting, receivables, corporate accruals, and other general accounting areas; oversee preparation and review of complex journal entries and account reconciliations.
  • Evaluate specific business transactions for proper accounting treatment and perform research and technical accounting assessments as needed.
  • Provide training and development for self and direct reports, giving clear direction on priorities, improving abilities, maintaining morale, and providing growth opportunities.
  • Maintain current accounting policies, researching and applying current and upcoming guidance.
  • Coordinate activities related to external audits, working with auditors to provide documentation and address audit findings.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy of financial operations; drive standardization and documentation of controls.
Critical Skills & Attributes
  • Deep knowledge of US GAAP with a strong understanding of ASC 606.
  • Proven understanding of accounting fundamentals (recording, classifying, examining, analyzing financial transactions).
  • Excellent time‑management and organizational skills; flexible in dealing with change and shifting priorities to consistently meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with associates and external vendors while maintaining high integrity.
  • Strong proficiency in ERP/accounting software (Net Suite, One Stream, Blackline) and intermediate Excel skills.
Required Experience & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field (CPA or Master’s preferred).
  • 7 + years of experience in financial reporting and/or corporate accounting, preferably with a Big 4 or large regional public accounting firm.
  • 2 + years of leadership experience or equivalent combination of experience and training providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
