Job Description

Applicants must have a Kentucky teaching certificate or statement of eligibility in FMD / Moderate and Severe Disabilities for grades K‑12. A college or university letter of acceptance for an alternative route to certification will also be accepted.

For new or soon‑to‑be college graduates: a letter of explanation is needed for those who do not have one of the above documents. Please type a short letter describing: what you will be certified in, your graduation date, university name, and status regarding obtaining teacher certification.

Basic Function

To help special needs students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible men and women.

Representative Duties
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes at designated times and locations.
  • Plan a program of study that meets students’ individual needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to students’ maturity and interests.
  • Prepare for classes assigned and provide written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.
  • Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Guide the learning process toward curriculum goals and establish clear objectives for lessons, units, projects, etc.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location and students’ capacities.
  • Strive to implement by instruction and action the district’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  • Assess students’ accomplishments regularly and provide progress reports as required.
  • Diagnose learning disabilities regularly, seeking assistance of district specialists as required.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Assist administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct; develop reasonable classroom rules and maintain order fairly.
  • Be available to students and parents outside instructional day when required or requested under reasonable terms.
  • Plan and supervise assignments for instructional aides/volunteers; evaluate their performance cooperatively with department heads.
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Maintain regular attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Requires ability to lift, carry, push or pull light weights.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (minimum requirement).

Licenses and Other Requirements

Valid Kentucky Teaching Certification for Special Education.
