DOCJT is offering a higher starting salary for Law Enforcement Training positions. This role supports training for basic recruits, patrol officers, first-line supervisors, mid-level executives, and executive leaders through in-person and virtual methods.
Responsibilities And Duties- Instructs, evaluates, coordinates and recommends law enforcement topics and scenario-based training to agency leaders reflecting the needs of the agencies served.
- Conducts research, manages and develops training curriculum, updates lesson plans, develops new lesson plans and instructional material for law enforcement topics.
- Coordinates training classes, class preparation and completes required training course administrative paperwork.
- Coordinates on-the-job training and mentoring for new instructional staff.
- Serves on agency committees.
- Advises and counsels trainees and assists in the development of training needs.
- Attends internal and external training courses.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
- Sworn law enforcement experience.
- Knowledge of computer technology (e.g., Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Blackboard).
- Ability to network with internal and external contacts and organizations (e.g., KACP, CJEDAA, KSA).
- Experience in scheduling and coordinating courses, including traditional and blended learning.
- Education and training hours in basic and advanced leadership development topics (coaching, mentoring, motivation, supervision, management, ethics, budgets, change management).
- Graduate of an advanced leadership program (e.g., FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute, SSL, Kellogg School of Management) or a Master’s in a leadership-related field.
- Meet KLEC certification requirements for leadership training (LEN Instructor Development Course and related credentials) with related experience or education substitutions as specified.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Lift heavy objects or work in uncomfortable positions for extended periods.
- May be required to carry and/or use a firearm.
- Frequently communicate in person or by other means of technology.
- Spend a major portion of time using a computer.
- Travel required (state vehicle provided).

Minimum RequirementsEDUCATION: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR
SKILLS:
Seven years of experience as a sworn law enforcement officer, telecommunicator, Law Enforcement Training Instructor, or related experience.
Substitute EDUCATION for
EXPERIENCE:
A master’s degree substitutes for one year of experience.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for
EDUCATION:
Additional experience as a sworn law enforcement officer, telecommunicator, or Law Enforcement Training Instructor may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must have completed 320 clock hours of in-service or equivalent continuing education credits approved by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council or the Department of Criminal Justice Training. Must maintain required licensure/certification for the length of employment. The employing agency must ensure possession and maintenance of required credentials.
Working ConditionsWork is typically performed in a classroom and/or simulated training setting. Travel to various facilities throughout the state may be required.
Probationary PeriodThis position has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, per KRS 18A.111.
