Position: Technician 4 - Detection Physics

Overview

At PNNL, our core capabilities are divided among major departments that we refer to as Directorates within the Lab, focused on a specific area of scientific research or other function, with its own leadership team and dedicated budget.

Our Science & Technology directorates include National Security, Earth and Biological Sciences, Physical and Computational Sciences, and Energy and Environment. In addition, we have an Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a Department of Energy, Office of Science user facility housed on the PNNL campus.

The National Security Directorate (NSD) drives science-based, mission-focused solutions to take on complex, real-world threats to our nation and the world.

The Physical Detection Systems and Deployment Division, part of NSD, delivers policy-informed technology solutions by removing barriers to real-world implementation. We strive to understand end-user environments to transition technology from the developmental stage to deployment. Our diverse expertise in operational systems provides tools, technologies, and approaches for combating a range of threats, both at home and in more than 100 countries around the globe.

Responsibilities

The Detection Physics (DP) group focuses on the development of detection systems and data analysis techniques for a variety of missions ranging from fundamental physics to national security. Projects within the research group range from highly applied projects in support of international treaties and national security to fundamental science projects in the areas of dark matter detection and neutrino physics. Candidates are expected to contribute positively to the breadth of work performed by the group.

The DP group is seeking qualified candidates to work as part of our team of technicians, scientists, and engineers in the R&D process, including design/fabrication, testing, and laboratory operations. The duties of this position will encompass a wide range of group support activities, and will require skills related to:

  • Working in a cleanroom environment
  • Mechanical fabrication / CAD design (Solidworks) / 3D printing / production of shop drawings
  • Cryogenic / gas processing / vacuum systems
  • Systems assembly / design / testing
  • Ability to read and/or produce process and wiring schematics
  • Use of basic hand tools / electronics equipment (e.g., multimeter, oscilloscope) / data acquisition and radiation detection systems
  • Commercial motor vehicle driver
  • Rapid prototyping
  • Contributions to technical reports / development of written procedures / presentation of progress and results

Successful candidates must be able to work independently with minimal or no direct supervision. They will be expected to take ownership of tasking, laboratory spaces, and the design, assembly, and operation of equipment and systems.

This position is located in Richland, WA and requires an on-site in-lab presence.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma/GED and 6 years of relevant experience
    -OR-
  • Technical Institute Graduate (TIG)/relevant AA degree or higher and 4 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience operating in and supporting work within regulated cleanroom environment
  • Ability to oversee and contribute to complex laboratory or technical operations
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to interpret and ensure adherence to strict protocols and quality standards
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment

Laboratory work with vacuum systems, pressurized gases, cryogenics, electronics, clean rooms, radiation sources, and control/measurement systems.

Routine lifting of heavy items, gowning and movement in a clean room environment, and standing for long periods of time.

Additional Information

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

A security clearance background investigation includes review of your employment, education, financial, and criminal history, as well as interviews with you and your personal references, neighbors, and co-workers to determine trustworthiness, reliability, and loyalty to the United States. The investigation also examines your foreign connections, drug and alcohol use, foreign influence, and overall conduct.

    Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix

  • Drug Testing:
    All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the applicant selected for hire is subject to pre-employment drug testing, and post-employment random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
