The Waste Management Manager reports to the Plant Integration and Support Manager and leads implementation of the Plant’s Waste Management, Transportation Logistics, and Chemical Management programs.

Waste Management Program activities include characterizing, generating, handling, treating, storing, and disposing of dangerous, radioactive, and mixed wastes in compliance with applicable regulatory and statutory requirements. Waste being managed include secondary solid waste, liquid effluent, and immobilized low activity waste product. Management of Transportation Logistics Program activities include transport of radioactive and nonradioactive hazardous material throughout the transportation and packaging process, including pre-planning and coordination, classification, documentation, field execution and transport, receipt and post-activity management.

Chemical Management Program activities include managing chemical inventory and use, and supporting Hanford Site Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) reporting and notifications.

As a cross-functional leader, the Waste Management Manager works successfully with Maintenance, Operations, Plant Engineering, Subcontractors, other plant functions, and other Hanford Site Contractors to ensure project objectives are achieved.

This position shall be performed under the day-to-day direction, control, and supervision of WTCC

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES/TASKS
  • Perform all work safely and with the utmost concern for the safety of self and other employees, and ensure work is performed in compliance with environmental permits and regulations.

  • Complete required training and maintain qualifications associated with assignments

  • Remain apprised of Plant’s operational status and ongoing modification activities

  • Supervise assigned personnel in the completion of complex work.

  • Ensure effective implementation of assigned programs, including coordination with other Plant functions and Hanford Site contractors. Monitor and assess program adequacy and implementation. Identify deficiencies and opportunities for improvement, and initiate corrective actions as needed.

  • Prioritize work and effectively implement customer-centric customer service model

  • Develop and implement key performance indicators (KPIs) and Objectives & Key Results (OKRs) for effective work execution.

  • Ensure work is performed within the constraints of the Project’s baseline and production control schedules, and within the Integrated Safety Management System framework.

  • Conduct concise, informative briefings which establish goals and priorities

  • Coordinate activities and meet the goals and objectives established by the facility management organization

  • Excellent inter-personal and inter-departmental communication skills are needed to facilitate plant work activities. Must be able to clearly and concisely communicate with peers and management.

  • May make presentations and reports to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Support the Waste Treatment Plant Nuclear Safety Quality Culture by emphasizing the values of safety and quality in the performance of work to protect self, others, and the environment.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leads a team of craft professionals and professional staff to successfully implement required work scope.

Education/

Experience:

Bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited college or university. Minimum 10 years’ experience that includes managing dangerous and radioactive waste, with five of these years in a management and/or supervisory capacity. Related DOE, DOD, or high hazard facility experience that includes support for facility construction, startup, commissioning, and / or operations required. Experience leading teams of craft professionals and professional staff required.

Professional certification such as a Safety Trained Supervisor, Certified Professional in Waste Management preferred.

Advanced degree may count toward experience.
