Overview

At PNNL, our core capabilities are divided among major departments that we refer to as Directorates within the Lab, focused on a specific area of scientific research or other function, with its own leadership team and dedicated budget.

Our Science & Technology directorates include National Security, Earth and Biological Sciences, Physical and Computational Sciences, and Energy and Environment. In addition, we have an Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a Department of Energy, Office of Science user facility housed on the PNNL campus.

The Energy and Environment Directorate delivers science and technology solutions for the nation’s biggest energy and environmental challenges. Our more than 1,700 staff support the Department of Energy (DOE), delivering on key DOE mission areas including: modernizing our nation’s power grid, renewable energy, nuclear science, and environmental management.

The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division (EIBD) is accelerating the transition to an efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. It leverages power and energy systems and advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.

The EIBD is one of PNNL’s most innovative teams, combining administrators, specialists, technicians, managers, scientists, and engineers to address America’s toughest energy challenges. Our mission is to provide multidisciplinary solutions that impact the nation, addressing technological, economic, regulatory, and market barriers and guiding policy and technological innovation.

Position Locations

Seattle, Richland, WA, or hybrid.

Responsibilities
  • Track data collection via internet searches, DOE office program records, intellectual property (patents), and by contacting technology developers/project principal investigators primarily by email and telephone.
  • Process and format data for publication and entry into PNNL’s technology tracking database.
  • Conduct outreach to private companies, national laboratories, and university researchers who have received DOE project funding and investigate potential technology development arising from R&D funding.
  • Collect and analyze patents and patent applications related to the technology areas and maintain project records for various office programs.
  • Develop and expand an online database of technology data for CMEI’s Advanced Manufacturing and Materials Technologies program, including summary articles and other relevant technology data.
  • Perform DOE-wide comprehensive analysis of program impact of various funding mechanisms (financial assistance, SBIR, STTR, etc.).
  • Collaborate with project investigators on energy-efficient and energy generation technologies and their commercialization trajectories, requiring a basic background understanding of the technology and engineering principles.
  • Assist in building a searchable electronic database for public access to support advanced analysis methods and economic analysis.
  • Accountable to Project Managers for performing assigned roles, following applicable project and field procedures, and timely, within-budget task completion.
  • Accountable to the Energy Technology Deployment Group Leader for general staff performance and development, operational discipline, and project execution.
Qualifications
  • BS/BA or higher.
  • Preferred:
    Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering.
  • Interest in energy efficiency technology, manufacturing, and materials R&D.
  • Proficiency in PowerPoint, Word, Access, and Excel (including VBA development environment).
  • Experience in a collaborative team environment to achieve project goals.
  • Demonstrated understanding of energy science or technology assessment.
  • Familiarity with federal R&D funding landscape.
  • Experience conducting due diligence research online, including federal resources.
  • Experience searching and collecting data from the U.S. Patent Office website.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Collaborative approach to problem‑solving and ability to work well with interdisciplinary and geographically distributed teams.
Minimum and Maximum Salary

USD $80,500.00 per year.
