Environmental Engineer, Environmental Compliance
Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure (H2C) delivers exceptional performance in safely removing, treating, and disposing of tank waste. H2C leads the nation's largest and most complex radioactive waste cleanup, including closure of the legacy waste tanks at Hanford containing 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste.
Joining H2C means becoming part of a team dedicated to creating "The Solution Today for a Better Tomorrow." At H2C, our culture is deeply rooted in our Vision, Mission, Values, and Behaviors, which guide our efforts on the Hanford Site and within our communities. Our vision to tackle the Department of Energy's largest environmental challenge reflects our commitment to leaving a positive legacy for future generations.
We strive to deliver exceptional performance in safely removing, treating, and disposing of tank waste. Our values emphasize living safely, acting with integrity, and working collaboratively as a team. We encourage innovation, personal accountability, and continuous improvement, fostering an environment where everyone is empowered to contribute to our mission and celebrate our achievements. By embracing these principles, you will be part of a forward-thinking organization dedicated to making a meaningful impact today and for the future.
H2C's key missions are to remove waste from Single Shell Tanks (SSTs) and place in Double Shell Tanks (DSTs), and then treat waste from DSTs to stage for eventual transfer to the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) for future vitrification – a process of turning the waste into glass for future disposal. H2C is the prime contractor responsible for Hanford Tank Farms and is a large company of 2,500+ employees.
H2C seeks an Environmental Scientist/Engineer who will provide environmental field support for the following:
- Provide oversight of design and procurement of items necessary to support construction of the Low‑Activity Waste Pretreatment System Phase II (Advanced Modular Pretreatment System [AMPS]), a project being designed to treat tank waste by filtration and ion exchange in support of future vitrification at WTP.
- Provide oversight of site infrastructure pre‑construction and construction activities.
- Provide oversight of process module design, fabrication and installation.
- Support environmental oversight during commissioning and operations of the AMPS, ensuring compliance with applicable dangerous waste, non‑radioactive and radioactive air permits.
Responsibilities of the Environmental Specialist include, but are not limited to the following activities:
- Provide day‑to‑day environmental support to ensure compliance with environmental policies, requirements, and procedures.
- Provide environmental input in work planning and high‑risk work reviews.
- Review and approve technical documents such as engineering designs, reports, calculations, specifications, work packages, procedures, control plans, site evaluations, and excavation permits.
- Oversee field activities, such as facility infrastructure and construction activities, to ensure activities are compliant with current permits and other regulatory requirements. This may require the donning of personal protective equipment appropriate for the hazards (e.g., respiratory equipment).
- Support the preparation of environmental permits or permit modifications.
- Perform surveillances and compliance inspections to provide organizational feedback on environmental performance.
- Prepare records/documentation for regulatory inspections or document requests.
- Ensure environmental data is collected and analyzed to demonstrate compliance with various RCRA, radioactive air, toxic air permits and other regulatory requirements.
- Provide Environmental on‑call support and issue regulatory notifications, as required.
- Maintain all required certifications and qualifications.
- Assist in developing tools and processes to verify compliance with requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned or delegated by management commensurate with training and qualifications.
