Project OverviewJoin us as we make history at the Hanford Vit Plant, known as the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant. We are designing and building a one‑of‑a‑kind facility that will turn radioactive and chemical waste left over from World War II and Cold War plutonium production into a form safe for disposal. Your efforts will help protect the nearby Columbia River and the communities, salmon, and wildlife along its shorelines throughout the Northwest.
Sitting at the confluence of the Columbia, Snake and Yakima rivers near two mountain ranges, our community provides access to year‑round outdoor recreation, 300 days of sun a year, more than 200 wineries within a 50‑mile radius, and the amenities of large cities just a three‑hour drive (or short flight) to Seattle and Portland.
Job SummaryYou will be working as a member of the Mechanical Handling Engineering group designing and supporting complex mechanical equipment. You will be responsible for design, development, modification, evaluation, and/or issues resolution of mechanical components and processes. The primary role is to collect the mechanical, control, safety, nuclear and other requirements for the equipment in order to develop highly detailed design documents, drawings, and calculations for the equipment to meet the applicable requirements.
The primary products of the Mechanical Handling Engineering Group are Specifications, Material Requisition s, Mechanical Handling diagrams, Mechanical Flow diagrams, drawings, equipment evaluations and equipment data sheets used to validate the suitability of the equipment for use on project.
This position is a full‑time role that offers part‑time telework flexibility in the Richland, Washington project office. Upon initial hire and onboarding, the position will require full time presence in the Richland, Washington project office, then may offer part‑time telework flexibility. This position works a 9/80 schedule, offering every other Friday off.

Major Responsibilities- Evaluates, selects, and applies standard mechanical engineering methods, techniques, procedures, and criteria, using independent judgment in making adaptations and modifications.
- Participates in the design, development, modification and evaluation of mechanical components and processes used utilizing relevant Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).
- Coordinates work and collaborates with other engineering disciplines.
- Provides technical assistance to other mechanical personnel and will interact with project functions, the customer, and regulatory agency personnel in the resolution of complex regulatory issues and industry codes and standards.
- Prepares standard discipline deliverables and prepares standard engineering budgets and schedules within discipline.
- Lead engineering efforts on assignments while providing instruction and mentoring junior engineers.
- Perform work that involves conventional engineering practice but may include complex features such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials and/or difficult coordination requirements.
- Prepares or assists in preparation of conceptual studies, designs, reports, or proposals.
Requires a bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 2-5 years of relevant experience or 6-9 years of relevant work experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills- Must be authorized to work and remain in the United States without Bechtel visa sponsorship now or in the future.
