I CARE Prevention Specialist

Summary

The ICARE Specialist works as a trained educator in parish schools, as assigned, in the areas of prevention, intervention, and postvention for substance abuse, violence, and crisis. The Specialist conducts training of students, teachers, school personnel, parents, and the general community in issues related to educating and preparing all children for living a healthy, safe, and drug‑free lifestyle. Must have the ability to represent the ICARE program in various schools and community settings and provide effective in‑service training, workshops, presentations and demonstrations.

The Specialist also works with students individually and in groups to address problems related to substance abuse and violence that might be affecting their school performance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists in the development of prevention needs assessments and recommends overall prevention strategies to be used with identified school populations. Conducts in‑service trainings and provides ongoing assistance for school counselors and other school personnel on implementation of prevention curricula and other strategies and on current prevention issues including identification of the signs and symptoms of alcohol and other drug use. Monitors the implementation and evaluation of prevention programs in assigned schools.

    Provides training for parents and other community members based on assessed needs.
  • Assists in design, development and implementation of conferences, workshops and training sessions.
  • Works collaboratively with school personnel/committees/teams to address related areas of concern.
  • Conducts individual student assessments and interventions, facilitates student support groups and makes referrals to appropriate resources.
  • Works in collaboration with school and community agencies/organizations/department/programs that address high risk behaviors and attends advisory council meetings, PTA/PTO and faculty meetings as needed.
  • Maintains appropriate records and documentation.
  • Pursues professional growth opportunities including but not limited to the acquisition of and/or maintenance of the License for Prevention Professionals.
  • Participates actively on staff committees and teams to promote and maximize collaboration and communication, sharing of expertise, diversity and networking.
  • Assists school personnel in developing, training and implementing student leadership programs.
  • Assists with interviews; planning and directing the tasks of the team/committees and resolving problems.
  • Managing students appropriately while in schools.
  • Managing the activities of teams and/or I CARE committees as assigned by the director.

Essential Functions / Qualifications / Requirements

Education and Experience

Graduate of an accredited college or university with a masters degree (minimum of six hours in counselor training preferred). A valid teaching and/or ancillary certificate with at least five years successful teaching experience required. Training and/or experience in the field of substance abuse and violence prevention with skills in counseling, group process, peer leadership, critical thinking and collaborative undertaking preferred. The I CARE Specialist should hold a current License for Prevention Professionals (formerly Board Certification as a Prevention Specialist), issued by Addictive Disorders Regulatory Authority Board (ADRA Board) or will complete the requirements for and obtain the aforementioned license within three (3) years of employment with the I CARE Program.
