The Consultant Physicians within Geriatric Medicine in Glan Clwyd Hospital have responsibility for managing inpatient services alongside several Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Trainee Nurse Practitioners at Colwyn Bay Hospital, Denbigh Infirmary and Holywell Community Hospital with regular outpatient clinics held at Colwyn Bay and Holywell Community Hospitals. Llandudno General Hospital has two COTE Consultants based on that site supported by a team of Advanced Nurse Practitioners and a GP trainee.
A Consultant Geriatrician also provides clinical input to the community based Enhanced Care Services in North and South Denbighshire. A researcher attached to the department has a special interest in Parkinson’s Disease and has published a significant number of papers in this area. The Movement Disorder Service is supported a Specialist Movement Disorder Consultant and three Parkinson’s Disease Specialist Nurses.
duties of the job
Provide Consultant input to 10-12 beds in a 24-bedded COTE ward (Ward
1) in Glan Clwyd Hospital along with other consultant colleagues based in that ward. The ward is supported by 1 SpR, 1 GP trainee, 1 IMT and 2 FY doctors.
Attend the ward’s Board Rounds to discuss patient’s management and discharge plans along with the junior doctors and multi-disciplinary team.
Have continuing responsibility for the care of patients under their care in liaison with consultant colleagues, allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff. The post holder, in liaison with consultant colleagues, will have responsibility for the proper functioning of the department in line with the operational policy/Strategic Plan of COTE and BCUHB.
Participate in a 1:17 acute medical on-call rota with prospective cover (1 additional DCC) and post-take ward rounds. The ward’s Consultant Physician teams look after medical patients admitted to the medical wards. The post holder will be expected to act as Educational or Clinical Supervisor for junior medical staff assigned to them, over seeing their training and offering advice for doctors regarding their careers, within the guidelines of the specialist bodies and the Royal Colleges.

Person specificationEssential Criteria
Qualifications and Professional Training
- GMC Specialist Registration or within 6 months of obtaining CCT from date of interview
- MRCP or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Higher Degree e.g., MD, PhD
- Publications in peer reviewed journals
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- A wide experience in General and Geriatric Medicine
- Experience of clinical audit
Desirable criteria
- Experience in Frailty, Stroke, Community Geriatrics or other sub specialty
Teaching
Essential Criteria
- Experience of teaching undergraduate and post graduate medical staff, and therapy and nursing staff
Desirable criteria
- Teaching qualification
Skills
