Job Overview

To provide care in an identified clinical discipline (endodontics) to patients referred in accordance with the agreed policy. To perform other duties as specified to meet the requirements of the service. To participate in training for a range of staff. To work alongside specialists in special care dentistry, consultant in paediatric dentistry, restorative dentistry and orthodontics.

Main duties of the job

Undertake appropriate endodontic assessment and investigations for patients to determine the need for onward referral to a specialist/consultant. Management of orthograde endodontic treatment with magnification, rotary system instrumentation and contemporary techniques and materials. Management of trauma, including immature apices. Endodontic treatment for complex root canal anatomy with increased curvature of canals. Plans and manages care where there are complex medical co-morbidities or the situation requires the involvement of other professionals and/or carers to resolve complex patient management issues.

This may involve the provision of care in fixed clinics and/or by utilising mobile dental units or at hospital venues. May take responsibility for organising the training and resources for the acute management of medical emergencies within the service as delegated.

Job Description And Main Responsibilities Clinical
  • Meets clinical competences for a Dentist with Enhanced Skills (Endodontics).
  • In addition to the competencies expected on completion of undergraduate and Dental Foundation Training or its equivalent, a Dentist with enhanced Skills would be expected to have evidence of competencies identified below:
  • Undertakes appropriate endodontic assessment and investigations for patients to determine the need for onward referral to a specialist/consultant.
  • Management of orthograde endodontic treatment with magnification, rotary system instrumentation and contemporary techniques and materials.
  • Management of trauma, including immature apices.
  • Identification, exploration and obturation of canals where the referring dentist has been unable to locate.
  • Negotiation of canals appearing clinically/radiographically sclerosed in the coronal portion but negotiable thereafter.
  • Removal of fractured posts.
  • Endodontic treatment for complex root canal anatomy with increased curvature of canals.
  • Treatment of teeth where it has not been possible to achieve good local analgesia with conventional methods.
  • Plans and manages care where there are complex medical co-morbidities or the situation requires the involvement of other professionals and/or carers to resolve complex patient management issues. This may involve the provision of care in fixed clinics and/or by utilising mobile dental units or at hospital venues.
  • Can identify commonly occurring medical emergencies. Lead the dental team in the appropriate first line management of the emergency using appropriate techniques, equipment and drugs.
  • Keeps up to date with developments in this area and/or be able to advise other members of the team.
