Under general supervision of the Store or Outlet Manager, the Assistant Store Manager is responsible for assisting in the overall store operations including collections, processing, sales, financial performance, loss control activities and personnel management, referring only unusual situations and conditions to the supervisor. May supervise work for store associates and shift supervisors present during each scheduled shift, as assigned by Store Manager or in the absence of Store Manager.
May be required to lay out and supervise work for community service workers and supported employment work crews.
Will typically be required to work regular weekend (i.e. Saturday, Sunday), evening and holiday hours customary to the retail trade.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Oversee the proper handling and processing of incoming and outgoing materials (on‑site donations, merchandise received from donation centers and/or other stores, processed goods, salvage goods, and waste).
- Maximize used goods processing through Goodwill techniques, including sorting, preparing and pricing items for sale; meet or exceed production goals.
- Maximize sales performance through proper rotation, pricing, display, signage, promotions and inventory of processed merchandise; meet or exceed sales goals.
- Ensure quality customer service is provided by self and employees to all shoppers, donors and other employees; be available for telephone customer relations activities.
- Manage supported employment work crews and community service workers assigned to the store.
- Maintain sales floor appearance, cleanliness and shopping environment; ensure doors, cash registers, restrooms are in proper working order.
- Maintain building exterior and parking lot appearance; maintain processing area and equipment; periodically inventory selected areas.
- Assist the Store Manager in managing the store budget, payroll, processing goals, revenue generation and expense control.
- Handle proper cash management, enforce cash register procedures, submit required reports, verify daily cash report and receipts, ensure pick‑ups and deposits.
- Ensure store and premises stay clean and safe, enforce safety protocols, maintain security systems, conduct incident reports and safety inspections.
- Prepare and submit work orders for maintenance; report and investigate fraud allegations; open/close store daily; maintain security systems.
- Handle shipping and handling of donated product per protocols.
- Interview, hire, train and direct store personnel; maintain positive morale; schedule employees; ensure adherence to policies and regulations.
- Complete store reports accurately and timely.
Employee will be required to perform bank transactions necessary to store operations, e.g., depositing daily receipts; be on Alarm Responder Roster; respond to alarm calls; maintain phone service; respond to alarm calls, etc.
Qualifications- High school diploma or GED plus a minimum of two years related experience, including supervisory experience; or combination of specialized training or post‑secondary education in related field and retail experience.
- Age 18 or older.
- Ability to read, write, interpret safety rules, operating instructions, procedure manuals; write routine reports.
- Ability to speak effectively before individuals or groups.
- Mathematical ability to calculate figures such as discounts, commissions, percentages.
- Reasoning ability to apply common sense understanding in written, oral or diagrammatic instructions.
- Knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting principles; proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Knowledge of brand name apparel and other merchandise sold in Goodwill stores.
- High integrity and business ethics.
- Stand, walk, talk or hear regularly; use hands to handle and reach; occasionally sit, climb, balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl.
- Frequently lift up to 25 pounds, occasionally up to 100 pounds, regularly push crates up to 600 pounds.
- Assist customers with unloading and carrying heavy items; use hand truck; seek assistance when needed; apply proper lifting techniques.
- In close proximity: vision for reading and color discrimination.
Use protective eyewear and gloves when handling cleaning solutions, push‑sticks, sorting; latex gloves if required.
Work EnvironmentThe work environment is hectic fast‑paced with production quotas; exposure to wet/humid conditions, mechanical parts, high places, fumes, chemicals, outside weather, electrical shock; noise moderate.
