Starting salary $750 per week (commensurate with experience).
Position OverviewTheatre By The Sea (TBTS) is seeking an Assistant Sound (A2) for its 2026 summer season. The A2 is a core member of the sound department, supporting the Sound Supervisor (A1) in the installation, operation, and maintenance of audio systems for a four-show musical season. This position is embedded in sound operations across prep, technical rehearsals, performances, and changeovers, and plays a critical role in wireless microphone management and day-to-day audio support.
The A2 works closely with the A1, Stage Management, and performers to ensure consistent, high-quality sound throughout the season. This role is ideal for an audio technician who enjoys hands‑on work, values teamwork, and wants to be part of a cohesive summer stock sound department.
- Support the Sound Supervisor (A1) in sound system load‑ins, setup, testing, changeovers, and strikes.
- Manage wireless microphone systems, including mic prep, fitting, maintenance, troubleshooting, and tracking.
- Assist with RF coordination and monitoring under the direction of the A1.
- Support sound operations during technical rehearsals and performances.
- Assist with playback operation or mixing support as needed.
- Maintain audio equipment, cabling, and backstage audio areas throughout the season.
- Communicate clearly with Stage Management and performers regarding mic needs and issues.
- Assist with troubleshooting audio issues during rehearsals and performances.
- Support safe working practices and help maintain a clean, organized audio workspace.
This position includes participation in technical support for Theatre By The Sea’s children’s productions on an as‑needed basis. Specific dates and expectations will be communicated in advance and incorporated into the seasonal schedule.
Qualifications- Prior experience as an Assistant Sound (A2), Audio Technician, or equivalent role in regional or summer stock theatre.
- Working knowledge of theatrical sound systems and musical theatre workflows.
- Experience with wireless microphones and backstage mic management.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
- Clear communication skills and a calm, professional demeanor under pressure.
- Full‑season commitment required.
- Positions are scheduled for 40 hours per week.
- Evening and weekend work required based on rehearsal, performance, and production schedules.
- Overtime is limited, requires prior approval, and is typically confined to technical rehearsal and changeover weeks.
Competitive weekly rate, commensurate with experience. Housing and travel assistance may be available.
