The Senior Business Intelligence (BI) Developer owns the BI semantic layer and platform at Stanley Martin Homes—designing governed datasets and explores, implementing a shared metrics layer, and optimizing BI performance, security, and content lifecycle. This role partners closely with Data Engineering (DE) via clear data contracts/SLAs and with BI Analysts on requirements, UX, and adoption.
Responsibilities and Duties- Design and maintain semantic models (e.g., LookML or equivalent): dimensions, measures, aggregate tables/PDT strategies, governed explores, and reusable subject ‑ area data marts for BI.
- Implement and steward the metrics layer (definitions, tests, versioning); enforce naming conventions and change ‑ management processes.
- Platform administration and governance: content lifecycle and certifications, role-/row-level security (RLS/OLS), usage monitoring, performance tuning, and query cost control.
- Define data contracts (schemas, freshness, quality rules) with Data Engineering; log/track issues via agreed SLAs and incident workflows.
- Write advanced SQL for BI models and optimize queries against curated warehouse layers; troubleshoot performance at warehouse and BI-tool levels.
- Lead UAT for BI data sets and metrics; design business ‑ facing validation checks with Analysts; remediate defects with DE.
- Establish modeling standards and best practices; maintain architecture diagrams, runbooks, and developer playbooks.
- Mentor BI Analysts/Developers on semantic modeling, query optimization, and dashboard performance.
- Produce reference dashboards and reusable components (themes/tiles) that demonstrate best practice; partner with Analysts for broad dashboard build‑out and UX.
- Familiarity with modern ELT stacks and warehouse tooling (e.g., Fivetran, Coalesce/dbt, Snowflake/Big Query).
- Awareness of open table formats (e.g., Iceberg/Delta) and query engines; understanding of implications for BI performance and governance.
- Scripting experience (Python/R) for BI ‑ adjacent automation and testing.
- Industry exposure to residential real estate/construction or Marketing analytics.
- Familiarity with Looker’s Agentic AI workflows and Conversational API capabilities
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics or a related field. - Experience:
5+ years in Business Intelligence or Data Analytics with 3+ years focused on BI semantic modeling (e.g., LookML/Power BI semantic model/Tabular) and governed data sets. - Expert SQL with hands ‑ on performance diagnostics (execution plans, caching/aggregation strategies, warehouse compute scaling).
- Proven experience administering BI platforms (e.g., Looker, Power BI): security (RLS/OLS), workspace/content governance, usage monitoring.
- Strong understanding of dimensional modeling and analytics data ‑ mart design; ability to read warehouse schemas and partner effectively with Data Engineering.
- Experience with Git ‑ based workflows for BI model versioning, code review, and promotion across environments.
- Excellent communication skills; able to translate business needs into durable models and clear data contracts.
- Comfortable working in an Agile framework (e.g., Jira/Trello); strong documentation habits.
