Under the direction of the School Health Division Director and Assistant Director of School Health, this position provides leadership and program oversight to a group of professional/paraprofessional staff, including Public Health Nurse IIs and IIIs, Licensed Practical Nurses, and School Health Aides. Responsibilities include managerial oversight of a district office school health team, budget responsibilities for capital equipment, personnel, and physical space, and leadership of support activities on population health.

The role utilizes quantitative and analytical methods to collect and analyze data, promotes health initiatives designed to engage the community, advances health equity, and applies quality improvement and performance management processes to improve school health services and student health outcomes. The incumbent collaborates with colleagues to support and enhance school health services, working within multidisciplinary and multi‑agency teams to achieve desirable outcomes for students, families, and communities.

The position also promotes individual and population health by assuring the quality and accessibility of school health services, preventing the spread of disease, encouraging healthy behaviors, and responding to disasters.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from a college or university accredited by the National League for Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education with a bachelor's degree in nursing; plus five years of post‑licensure experience as a nurse in an equivalent health care setting with a primary focus on prevention services and community education, including three years in a public health/community health setting. Prior experience may include ambulatory care or specialty settings that incorporate community outreach/education, teaching, or resource referrals.

At least one year of supervisory experience is required.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES

REQUIRED:

  • Possession of a current license or a multi‑state licensure privilege to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Valid motor vehicle driver’s license.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification (within 30 days of appointment).
  • AED certification (within 30 days of appointment).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (within 30 days of appointment).

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee will be required to complete a criminal background check, a Child Protective Services Registry check, a driving record check, and sanction screening to the satisfaction of the employer.

This position is classified as emergency/essential services personnel and is required to report for duty during inclement weather and/or other emergencies.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in public health, public administration, nursing, or a related field, with at least four years of progressively responsible leadership experience in public or community health.
  • Two or more years of direct experience providing health services to school‑aged children in a public‑school environment.
  • Four years of experience working in public or community health settings, including participation on multidisciplinary and multi‑agency teams.
  • At least two years of supervisory experience, or equivalent experience providing oversight, direction, and support to staff.
  • Two or more years of experience developing staff capacity through coaching, accountability, change management, influence, and effective communication strategies.
