Lead Substation Physical Engineer

Description

We are looking for a Lead Substation Physical Engineer to join our team. This role involves designing substation electrical projects for electric utilities at voltages from 12 kV to 500 kV, including digital‑logic design, AC/DC circuits, and substation physical drawings. Candidates will work closely with project teams and clients, ensuring quality control and compliance with project scope, schedule, and budget.

Hybrid / Remote Options

Hybrid in‑office schedule or remote options available. Candidates must be able to travel to Charlotte, NC client sites.

Responsibilities (The Challenge)
  • Execute substation physical projects.
  • Communicate effectively with internal teams and clients.
  • Perform quality control checks on design projects.
  • Read and design substation physical drawings: one‑line, three‑line, plan‑section, foundation, and grounding drawings.
  • Create and check bill of materials for substation physical components.
  • Attend site visits at customer locations.
Qualifications (What Sets You Apart)
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field with 8+ years of substation physical design experience.
  • Experience with grounding studies / lightning protection / lighting studies.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Collaborative team leader.
  • Self‑starter capable of working independently with minimal direction.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Proficient computer competency.
  • Willingness to travel to projects and/or client sites.
Preferred Additional Qualifications
  • Engineer Intern (EI) or EIT certification.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Working knowledge of protection and control design.
  • Experience with bus calculation.
  • Experience with WinIGS or CDEGS.
  • Master’s degree in a related field.
Pay Range
