Project Overview

Bechtel is the licensing, engineering, procurement, and construction partner on Terra Power’s Natrium team. Selected by the U.S. Department of Energy for its Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program, Natrium is deploying a 345 MWe sodium fast reactor (SFR) named Natrium, featuring an advanced, cost‑competitive design that is safer, simpler, and less expensive to operate. The plant will incorporate an innovative molten salt energy storage system to balance renewable generation, providing more than 500 MWe of combined power.

Partners include GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, Energy Northwest, Pacifi Corp, Duke Energy, national laboratories, and universities.

Job Summary

The Automation Engineer applies engineering software management/support expertise to a broad range of engineering computer‑aided design/computer‑aided engineering software that supports engineering work processes. In this role, you will provide automation support to engineering teams on the project, including setup, training, application and process, software quality assurance and control, reporting, database administration, and close‑out of all construction automation software and applications.

Telework Note

This position is designated as part‑time telework per our global telework policy and will require at least three days of in‑person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in‑person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership.

Major Responsibilities
  • Integrate primary engineering tools (Smart 3D, Smart Electrical, Smart Instrumentation, Smart P&, and other Integraph tools or equivalents) used by various engineering disciplines.
  • Manage and troubleshoot software issues.
  • Develop and enforce best practices for S3D usage, data standards, and workflows.
  • Train users on S3D functionalities, tools, and workflows.
  • Maintain complete understanding of how upstream and downstream users are impacted by engineering data.
  • Set up software for use by disciplines and functions.
  • Maintain project title blocks and templates.
  • Develop and deploy reports, queries, material take‑offs, etc.
  • Train users on software and automation work processes.
  • Manage software inventory and licenses.
  • Work with disciplines and departments to identify and integrate data.
  • Develop desktop instructions and procedures related to data management, data integration, data quality, automation planning, etc.
  • Use excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Collaborate with GBU Automation, Project Engineering, Functional Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Startup, IS&T, and Operations on engineering‑related automation issues.
  • Collaborate with product vendors to select appropriate software and licenses.
  • Work well with other disciplines, functions, and customers.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Requires bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited institution (or international equivalent) and 2‑5 years of relevant experience, or AA/AS degree with 6 years of related experience, or high school diploma with 6‑9 years of relevant work experience.
Basic Qualifications
  • Must be able to complete a pre‑employment drug screen and background check.
  • Must be authorized to live and work in the US without sponsorship.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Advanced experience with 2D and 3D software products and associated work processes (Smart 3D, Smart Electrical, Smart Instrumentation, Smart P&, or equivalents).
  • Significant Engineering, Construction, Project Controls, Procurement, Automation, or Information Systems experience with passion for implementing new and innovative work processes.
  • Experience working with disciplines to maintain software versions and lists to ensure appropriate software is used.
  • Experience with industry‑wide database systems such as Access, Oracle, and SQL Server.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced experience configuring, administering, and deploying Smart 3D.
  • Conversant knowledge of data security.
  • Experience with Bechtel Software Application Programs.
