Job Description:

This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Valley Medical Center and will be narrowed during the interview process based on several factors, including (but not limited to) the candidate s experience, qualifications, location, and internal equity.

Overview

The position description is a guide to the critical duties and essential functions of the job, not an all-inclusive list of responsibilities, qualifications, physical demands, and work environment conditions. Responsibilities
  • Assess, guide, direct, and facilitate workflow on the unit. Recognizes when the charge nurse should assume a patient assignment and assumes that role.
  • Make staff assignments reflecting patient acuity, continuity of care, staff competency, and admit/transfer/discharge activity.
  • Mentor staff, float, and agency personnel regarding unit/department/hospital policies and annual goals.
  • Integrate new staff and agency staff into the unit culture; function as a leader and clinical resource; demonstrate safe use of patient care equipment.
  • Identify resource RN for LPN, PCA, and MST as necessary; monitor and evaluate nursing care via direct observation, consultation, and patient rounds.
  • Assess unit/environmental safety and report/correct deficiencies; maintain awareness of Joint Commission standards and applicable regulations.
  • Ensure effective documentation, compliance with standards, and timely turnover; respond to patient and family concerns; escalate significant events per policy.
  • Provide input into performance appraisal of clinical staff; evaluate staffing coverage and adjust as needed; maintain competencies for direct patient care and leadership.
  • Collaborate with bed placement and clinical resources to expedite clinical placement.
Qualifications Prerequisites
  • BSN preferred.
  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Washington.
  • Successful completion of a graduate nurse residency program orientation or six months' experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • AHA BLS for healthcare providers required.
Preferred For Advancement To Charge Nurse Role
  • BSN
  • Experience—Two years  practice in clinical nursing/leadership in area of responsibility preferred
  • Unit specific prerequisites see addendum.

  • Practices within ANA Standards and Nurse Practice Act; proficient with electronic systems for order entry, e-mail, and documentation.

Unique Physical/Mental Demands, Environment And Working Conditions

Must be able to provide safe patient handling per VMC guidelines; ability to lift, move patients and objects, operate lifting equipment, and perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, reaching, standing, and walking for extended periods. Requires corrected vision and hearing and color discrimination.
