The staff RN is a licensed professional who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated time frame. This individual provides safe, quality care to these patients utilizing the nursing process as the basis for clinical practice.
Reports to:
Nurse Manager/Assistant Nurse Manager
- BSN preferred.
- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Washington.
- Successful completion of a graduate nurse residency program orientation or six months experience as a Registered Nurse.
- AHA BLS for healthcare providers required.
- Preferred for advancement to Charge Nurse role: BSN.
- Experience:
Two years practice in clinical nursing/leadership in area of responsibility preferred. - Unit specific prerequisites: see addendum.
- General
Qualifications:
demonstrates leadership, clinical judgment, communication skills, and ability to work with diverse populations; able to work effectively with all age groups; adheres to ANA standards and Nurse Practice Act; proficient with electronic documentation and order entry; self-directed in advancing professional practice.
- Assess, guide, and direct workflow on the unit; recognize when the charge nurse should assume a patient assignment.
- Make staff assignments reflecting patient acuity, continuity of care, staff competency, and admission/transfer/discharge activity.
- Mentor staff, float, and agency personnel in policies, procedures, standards, and objectives.
- Integrate new staff into the unit culture; act as a clinical resource; demonstrate safe use of patient care equipment and teach others to use equipment safely.
- Monitor and evaluate nursing care through direct observation, consultation, and patient rounds.
- Maintain awareness of Joint Commission standards, state codes, and practice acts; monitor documentation and compliance; support rapid turnover cycles.
- Respond to patient and family concerns; address concerns and escalate as needed.
- Provide input into performance appraisals and ensure adequate shift coverage and staffing decisions for subsequent shifts.
- Collaborate with bed placement and clinical resources to expedite clinical placement.
- Must be able to provide safe patient handling per Safe Patient Handling guidelines, including lifting up to 40 pounds and team lifting.
- Ability to operate lifting equipment; stand, walk, bend, reach, stoop, and perform tasks for extended periods.
- Corrected vision and hearing to normal range; color discrimination; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
