Overview

The staff RN is a licensed professional who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated time frame. This individual provides safe, quality care to these patients utilizing the nursing process as the basis for clinical practice.

Reports to:

Nurse Manager/Assistant Nurse Manager

Prerequisites & Qualifications
  • BSN preferred.
  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Washington.
  • Successful completion of a graduate nurse residency program orientation or six months  experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • AHA BLS for healthcare providers required.
  • Preferred for advancement to Charge Nurse role: BSN.
  • Experience:

    Two years  practice in clinical nursing/leadership in area of responsibility preferred.

    Qualifications:

    demonstrates leadership, clinical judgment, communication skills, and ability to work with diverse populations; able to work effectively with all age groups; adheres to ANA standards and Nurse Practice Act; proficient with electronic documentation and order entry; self-directed in advancing professional practice.
Essential Responsibilities And Competencies
  • Assess, guide, and direct workflow on the unit; recognize when the charge nurse should assume a patient assignment.
  • Make staff assignments reflecting patient acuity, continuity of care, staff competency, and admission/transfer/discharge activity.
  • Mentor staff, float, and agency personnel in policies, procedures, standards, and objectives.
  • Integrate new staff into the unit culture; act as a clinical resource; demonstrate safe use of patient care equipment and teach others to use equipment safely.
  • Monitor and evaluate nursing care through direct observation, consultation, and patient rounds.
  • Maintain awareness of Joint Commission standards, state codes, and practice acts; monitor documentation and compliance; support rapid turnover cycles.
  • Respond to patient and family concerns; address concerns and escalate as needed.
  • Provide input into performance appraisals and ensure adequate shift coverage and staffing decisions for subsequent shifts.
  • Collaborate with bed placement and clinical resources to expedite clinical placement.
Physical/Mental Demands & Work Environment
  • Must be able to provide safe patient handling per Safe Patient Handling guidelines, including lifting up to 40 pounds and team lifting.
  • Ability to operate lifting equipment; stand, walk, bend, reach, stoop, and perform tasks for extended periods.
  • Corrected vision and hearing to normal range; color discrimination; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
