Job Details

Critical Care Department, Night shift, Full‑time (0.9 FTE). Salary range: $46.94 – $85.76 per hour, DOE.

Job Description

Staff RN is a licensed professional responsible for a group of patients over a designated period, providing safe, quality care using the nursing process.

Prerequisites
  • BSN preferred.
  • RN license in Washington.
  • Completion of a graduate nurse residency program OR six months’ RN experience.
  • AHA BLS for healthcare providers required.
Preferred for Advancement to Charge Nurse Role
  • BSN.
  • Two years’ practice in clinical nursing or leadership experience.
  • Unit‑specific prerequisites (see addendum).
General Qualifications
  • Demonstrates leadership skills and ability to manage a team.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Adheres to the Professional Appearance Policy.
  • Shows compassion and works well with diverse populations.
  • Strong customer‑service skills.
  • Familiar with ANA Standards and the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Proficient with electronic health records and order entry.
  • Self‑directed in continued professional development.
Physical and Mental Demands

Safe patient handling per VMC guidelines: lift up to 40 lbs, use patient‑lifting equipment, stoop, bend, reach, squat, stand, and walk for extended periods. Requires manual and finger dexterity, correct vision and hearing, and ability to communicate various colors.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Assess, guide, direct, and facilitate workflow.
  • Make staff assignments aligning patient acuity and competency.
  • Mentor staff and integrate new and agency staff.
  • Lead and serve as a clinical role model.
  • Act as a clinical resource, demonstrating safe equipment use.
  • Identify resource RNs for LPNs, PCAs, and MSTs.
  • Monitor and evaluate nursing care via observation and patient rounds.
  • Asses unit/environmental safety and correct deficiencies.
  • Maintain awareness of Joint Commission standards and state codes.
  • Provide excellent customer‑service and respond to concerns.
  • Report significant events and activate the chain of command.
  • Provide input for performance appraisals and staff coverage.
  • Maintain fiscal responsibility by monitoring staffing needs.
  • Maintain competencies for direct patient care and team leadership.
  • Collaborate with bed placement to expedite clinical placement.
Unit & Residency Requirements – Critical Care
  • ACLS certification within 3 months of hire.
  • NIHSS certification within 3 months of hire.
  • Minimum one year of emergency or critical‑care nursing experience.

Additional unit specific prerequisites are available in the addendum (e.g., Endoscopy, PACU, OR, Labor & Delivery).
