Prerequisites
  • BSN preferred.
  • Current RN license in the state of Washington.
  • Graduated from a nurse residency program or completed six months of RN experience.
  • AHA Basic Life Support for healthcare providers required.
Desired Experience (for advancement to Charge Nurse)
  • BSN degree.
  • Two years of clinical nursing or leadership experience preferred.

    Must adhere to VMC Safe Patient Handling guidelines. Must lift up to 40 lbs, operate patient lifting equipment, stoop, bend, reach, crouch, and squat. Required to stand, walk for extended periods, have full body range of motion, manual/finger dexterity, eye‑hand coordination, corrected vision and hearing, and ability to distinguish colors.

    Essential Responsibilities and Competencies
    • Assess, guide, direct, and facilitate workflow on the unit, stepping into the charge nurse role when necessary.
    • Make staff assignments reflecting patient acuity, continuity of care, staff competency, and unit activity.
    • Mentor staff, float, and agency personnel on policies, procedures, standards, and objectives.
    • Integrate new staff and agency personnel into the unit culture.
    • Act as a leader and role model for clinical staff.
    • Serve as a clinical resource; teach safe use of patient care equipment.
    • Identify RN resources for LPN, PCA, and MST as needed.
    • Monitor and evaluate nursing care by observation, consultation, and patient rounds.
    • Assess unit/environmental safety; report and correct deficiencies.
    • Maintain awareness of Joint Commission standards, state codes, and practice acts; monitor documentation and compliance.
    • Demonstrate excellent customer service; respond to patient and family concerns.
    • Report significant events to supervisors and activate the chain of command per policy.
    • Contribute to performance appraisals of clinical staff.
    • Ensure adequate coverage for breaks.
    • Maintain fiscal responsibility by monitoring staffing, adjusting during shift, and determining staffing needs for the next shift.
    • Accept responsibility to maintain competencies for direct patient care and team leadership.
    • Collaborate with bed placement and clinical resources to expedite placement.
    Unit-Specific Requirements Emergency Department RN
    • ACLS & PALS within 3 months of hire.
    • NIHSS certification within 3 months of hire.
    • TNCC within 12 months of hire.
    • ENPC certification within 12 months of hire.
    • One year of ED experience or completion of ED residency preferred.
    Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
    • ACLS & PALS within 3 months of hire.
    • Preferred 2 years of med/surg experience with cardiac telemetry.
    Endoscopy
    • ACLS within 3 months of hire.
    • Preferred 6 months of experience in endoscopy or 1 year of med/surg experience.
    Perioperative Resource Team
    • ACLS & PALS within 3 months of hire.
    • Completion of PRT orientation within 12 months of hire.
    Admit and Discharge
    • ACLS & PALS within 3 months of hire.
    • One year of RN experience or previous experience in perianesthesia or admit & discharge preferred.
    Critical Care
    • ACLS within 3 months of hire.
    • NIHSS certification within 3 months of hire.
    • Minimum one year of experience in Emergency/Critical Care nursing required.
    Labor & Delivery
    • NRP within 3 months of hire.
    • ACLS within 3 months of hire.
    • Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring Certification (AWHONN) or C‑EFM certification.
