Job Overview

The staff RN is a licensed professional who assumes responsibility for a designated group of patients, providing safe, quality care using the nursing process as the basis for clinical practice.

Responsibilities
  • Assesses, guides, directs, and facilitates workflow on the unit.
  • Recognizes when the charge nurse needs to assume a patient assignment and takes that role when necessary.
  • Makes staff assignments reflecting patient acuity, continuity, staff competency, and required admit, transfer, and discharge activity.
  • Mentors staff, float, and agency personnel regarding unit/department/hospital policies and procedures.
  • Integrates new staff and agency staff into the unit culture.
  • Functions as a leader and role model for clinical staff.
  • Acts as a clinical resource, demonstrating safe use of patient care equipment and teaching others.
  • Identifies resource RN for LPN, PCA, and MST as needed.
  • Monitors and evaluates nursing care provided to each patient through direct observation, consultation, and patient rounds.
  • Assesses unit and environmental safety during rounds, reporting and correcting deficiencies.
  • Maintains awareness of Joint Commission standards, state codes, and practice acts; monitors documentation and compliance.
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service skills; responds to patient and family concerns.
  • Reports significant events to supervisors per policy and activates the chain of command.
  • Provides input into performance appraisal of clinical staff on shift via feedback documentation.
  • Evaluates and ensures adequate coverage for staff breaks.
  • Monitors staffing during shift, adjusting as needed, and determines staffing requirements for the following shift.
  • Takes personal responsibility to maintain competencies for direct patient care and team leadership.
  • Collaborates with bed placement and clinical resources to expedite patient placement.
Prerequisites
  • BSN preferred.
  • Current RN license in Washington State.
  • Successful completion of a graduate nurse residency program orientation or six months RN experience.
  • AHA BLS for healthcare providers required.
Preferred for Advancement to Charge Nurse
  • BSN.
  • Two years of clinical nursing experience and leadership in area of responsibility preferred.
  • Unit-specific prerequisites as referenced in the addendum.

Physical/Mental Demands, Environment, and Working Conditions
  • Safe patient handling: lift patients or objects up to 40 pounds and operate lifting equipment.
  • Physical abilities: stoop, bend, reach, crouch, squat, stand, and walk for extended periods.
  • Full body range of motion, manual and finger dexterity, and eye‑hand coordination required.
  • Corrected vision, normal hearing, and color discrimination required.
Unit Specific Requirements (Addendum)
  • Emergency Department RN – ACLS & PALS within 3 months, NIHSS certified within 3 months, TNCC within 12 months, ENPC within 12 months; 1 year ED experience preferred.
  • Emergency Department Resident – similar certifications as above; ED residency preferred.
  • Post Anesthesia Care Unit – ACLS & PALS within 3 months; preferred 2 years med/surg with telemetry.
  • Endoscopy – ACLS within 3 months; preferred 6 months experience.
