the special education program supervisor oversees special education programs for the transportation department. The supervisor is responsible for ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, laws and regulations, individual education plan (iep) and standards of safety.
responsibilities- coaches, mentors, and advises bus drivers and pupil transportation assistants.
- assists in conflict management and disciplinary procedures when necessary.
- assists in conducting performance evaluations for pupil transportation assistants.
- monitors and submits time clock/sheet payroll reports for pupil transportation assistants.
- participates in the selection and interviewing process for new transportation employees.
- ride on routes to observe, coach, and monitor bus drivers and pupil transportation assistants related to student management.
- provides continuous professional development opportunities for transportation staff with a focus on special education.
- collaborates with the training division to assist with the design of training programs for novice special education drivers.
- attends local, regional, and national training sessions to acquire new information for special education bus drivers and transportation assistants.
- assists with proactive staff succession planning.
- serves as a bus driver or pupil transportation assistant as needed.
- routinely interacts with bus drivers, pupil transportation assistants, parents and school officials to resolve transportation challenges.
- assists bus drivers and pupil transportation assistants with developing solutions to pupil management problems.
- investigates customer service complaints related to safety issues, student issues, accommodations, and staff concerns and takes corrective action when necessary.
- determines appropriate responses to parents and school site staff on transportation related issues.
- processes and maintains legal documents for special education transportation and maintains related forms, manuals, and supplies.
- attends i.e.p. Meetings to determine appropriate transportation accommodations and ensure compliance with federal and state guidelines.
- attends parent meetings and arranges alternate transportation when needed (city bus, separate routes, modified schedules, etc.).
- facilitates accurate enrollment information and ensures transportation requests are submitted correctly and on time for special education.
- collaborates regularly with various groups, individuals, and departments regarding special needs transportation.
- determines appropriate route assignments based on student assignments, iep accommodations, load counts, and student behaviors.
- collaborates with field safety supervisors to determine safe and suitable student drop locations.
- reviews special education route sheets for accuracy, logical routing, and complete student information.
- works closely with the systems and logistics manager on special education routing.
- may perform other duties as assigned.
any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
education: high school diploma required. Associate's degree with coursework in special education and/or program management preferred.
experience: five (5) years of experience as a school bus driver, dispatcher, driver supervisor or experience working with special education children required.
licenses/certificates: possession of or ability to obtain a valid nevada state class b commercial driver's license (cdl), with passenger and school bus endorsements and a driving record acceptable to the district required. Possession of or the ability to obtain first aid and cpr certification required.
knowledge of:
- federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to the transportation industry, the k-12 and special education settings and emergency procedures.

- district administrative regulations, board policies, and procedures pertaining to the transportation department.
