Position: WILDLAND FIREFIGHTER - SEASONAL

This recruitment is being conducted to fill future Seasonal Wildland Firefighter vacancies funded by grants and/or NV Energy contract.

The Wildland Firefighter - Seasonal is a Regular PERS position when hours have met the criteria.

REQUIRED BLM FITNESS CHALLENGE

Consisting of 1.5 Mile Run, Push-ups, Pull-ups and Sit-ups

This is a required portion of the recruitment process and will be Pass/Fail, minimum 100 points required to Pass. No other agency scores will be accepted, you must participate to move forward. You will be sent notices to sign up if you are determined to have met the minimum qualifications.

  • NWCG S-130 Basic Wildland Firefighter within ninety (90) days of appointment.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Work independently or as a skilled member of a fuels management crew engaged in fuels management, including broadcast burning, hand piling, pile burning, other brush disposal techniques, and herbicide application.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools, including chainsaws, firing equipment, and/or portable pumps.
  • Gather data and record information on fuel types, weather conditions, fire behaviors, and status of work accomplished.
  • Responsible for observing the rules of fire safety and fire behavior while on the fireline.
  • Serve as a member of the fire crew assigned to suppress the full range of wildland fires independently, performing recurring fire suppression duties.
  • Perform assignments as a wildland firefighter, developing a working knowledge of fire suppression and fuels management techniques, practices, and terminology.
  • May work in and around aircraft such as helicopters and must be able to observe all safety regulations.
  • Searches out and extinguishes burning materials by moving dirt, applying water by hose or backpack pump, etc. Chops brush, fells small trees, and moves dirt to construct fireline using various hand tools such as axes, shovels, Pulaskis, and McLeods, and may use power tools including chainsaws and portable pumps to control the spreading of wildland fire and/or to prepare control lines prior to burning.
  • Patrol fireline to locate and extinguish embers, flareups, and hotspot fires that may threaten developed firelines.
  • Cleans, reconditions, and stores fire tools and equipment.
  • May assist trained personnel in more specialized assignments, such as backfire/burnout, mobile/stationary engine attack, construction of helispots, helitack operations, and performing hover hookups.
  • Participate in fire and safety training in the techniques, practices, and methods of fire suppression and in the safe, efficient operation and use of tools, equipment, and vehicles used in fireline activities.
  • Participate in crew proficiency checks and drills. Participate in safety sessions and fire critiques.
  • Ensures own and others' welfare and safety in all aspects of the assignments.
  • Use specialized fuels management tools, such as a motorized chipper and chain saws; use power tools, specialized hand tools, and fire suppression equipment to construct fire lines; install and remove hose lays; perform fire suppression and mop-up operations after the fire is controlled; receive training in maintenance and routine fire line operation of heavy equipment as needed.
