clinical procedure nurse i – under the supervision of a certified school nurse, assumes care for students who require medically ordered health care procedures, and performs other health related duties as required.
distinguishing characteristicsthe clinical procedure nurse requires current licensure by the nevada state board of nursing as a licensed practical nurse (lpn) or a registered nurse (rn), and performs nursing procedures in accordance with the nevada state board of nursing's school nurse regulation and advisory opinion. The clinical procedure nurse is distinguished from a certified school nurse in that the clinical procedure nurse does not require school nurse endorsement by the nevada state board of education.
The clinical procedure nurse works under the supervision of a certified school nurse.
- assists certified school nurses by assuming care for students who require specialized nursing procedures and one-to-one continuous licensed nursing services. May be required to provide continuous care and monitoring for students at all times during the school day, including transportation rides to and from school and to respond to emergency situations.
- able to stoop, bend, and sit for long period of time. Able to push, pull, and lift 25 pounds.
- performs medically ordered health care procedures including, but not limited to: gastrostomy tube feedings; catheterizations, colostomy and ileostomy care, tracheostomy suctioning and emergency tracheostomy tube replacement, diabetes care and insulin injections; assist with maneuvering wheelchairs and other health care equipment.
- follows all health directives as defined by the certified school nurse and in accordance with the individual student health care plan.
- ride school bus with students that require nursing services to and from school.
education/experience: any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
- education: equivalent to a high school diploma and licensed practical.
and
- experience: three (3) years recent hospital, home health or community health as a licensed practical nurse is desirable.
knowledge of: nursing functions and procedures according to the nursing scope of practice as defined by nevada state board of nursing; and healthcare provider cpr.
skill at: licensed nursing services for students in an education-based setting; handling emergency situations with sound health care decisions and according to the individual student health care plan; ability to communicate and work cooperatively with clinical school nurses and other regular and ancillary school personnel using tact, patience and diplomacy; learning the policies and procedures related to student health services department;
recognizing hazards and applying safe work methods; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
licenses/certificates: possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid state of nevada driver license with a driving record acceptable to the district. Licensed by the nevada state board of nursing as a licensed practical nurse. Current healthcare provider cpr certification.
