Definition

The Youth Outreach Ambassador supports the Youth Outreach team by co-facilitating outreach and engages youth ages 12-24 who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, victims of abuse, vulnerable to trafficking, or may be in need of services provided by The Children s Cabinet and Cabinet partners. This role focuses on proactive outreach in both physical and digital spaces to connect youth with essential resources, safety services, and supportive programs.

Ambassadors build trust through consistent presence and understanding of the issues facing the youth and serve a vital role in the youth s ability to access support services in the community. This is a part-time (~20 hours per week) position and is reports to the Safe Place Coordinator.

Supervision

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Duties

Direct Outreach

  • Assist in conducting in-person outreach at identified locations (e.g., schools, malls, local youth focused businesses, areas along the Truckee River, and sports and community events).
  • Provide referrals for youth to Children s Cabinet programs and support services.
  • Conduct youth surveys to determine and improve the efficacy of youth outreach efforts.

Digital Engagement

  • Create and engage with social media campaigns on Instagram, Tik Tok, and X (Twitter) to reach youth online.
  • Respond to inquiries and provide information about Children s Cabinet youth programs, including Safe Place, and other resources through digital platforms.

Resource Distribution

  • Provide hygiene kits, food packets, seasonal clothing, and informational materials during outreach.
  • Adjust, maintain, and enhance care kits based on seasonal and observed needs (e.g., blankets in winter, sunscreen in summer).

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all safety protocols, including working in pairs and adhering to the Youth Outreach Safety Plan.
  • Maintain mandated reporting responsibilities for suspected abuse or trafficking.
  • Utilize the Nevada Rapid Indicator Tool to identify youth at risk of sexual exploitation or trafficking.

Emergency Response

  • Working with the Safe Place Coordinator and Youth Outreach Specialist, identify and help facilitate youth in need of immediate shelter placement, and notify law enforcement when necessary.
  • Coordinate program and support service referrals, including counseling and referrals to partners such as HSA and Awaken.

Community Engagement

  • Participate in community events and collaborate with local businesses, schools, and Safe Place partners to increase awareness of available youth programs and services offered by The Children s Cabinet and Cabinet partners.
  • Promote The Children s Cabinet branding and messaging throughout outreach efforts.

Other

  • Achieve an understanding of agency mission, strategic focus areas and overall goals and objectives. Contribute to the success of these areas.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current high school senior or high school diploma/HSE required; interest in Human Services, Education, Communications, or a related field preferred.
  • Lived experience as a youth or young adult navigating school, community programs, or support services preferred.
  • Experience participating in youth programs, student leadership, clubs, volunteering, or peer support activities preferred.
  • Basic computer skills required (email, word processing, internet use); willingness to learn design or outreach tools.

Knowledge Of

  • Awareness of community resources for youth and families or willingness to learn about local supports through training.
  • Basic understanding of youth experiences, relationships, and challenges.
  • Age-appropriate and respectful interactions with youth and adults.
  • Emerging leadership skills, including responsibility, reliability, and ability to ask for help when needed.
  • Basic computer applications and openness to learning new systems.
  • Introductory understanding of safety and crisis response procedures (training provided).

Ability To

  • Arrive on time to scheduled shifts, meetings, and activities.
  • Work respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Support or assist with presentations, outreach activities, or tabling events with guidance and supervision.
  • Learn new skills through training, coaching, and hands-on experience.
  • Communicate clearly and appropriately in person and in writing (social media posts, short reflections, or outreach messages).
  • Perform job duties with reasonable accommodations, including light lifting (up to 40 lbs), standing/walking, and computer use.
  • Serve as a positive peer role model, demonstrating respectful behavior and appropriate boundaries.
  • Work as part of a team and follow direction from supervisors and program staff.
