Under supervision, receives training and develops knowledge of an assigned area in order to conduct research and complete assignments within a County Department; and performs related work as required.
Vector-Borne Disease Program Location and dates:- Job location includes Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County
- Positions are seasonal (6 months) 40 hours/weekly June through August, 20 hours/weekly April, May, and September, 7 am to 4 pm
- Flexible schedules around class work and study requirements
- Ideal applicants should be enrolled in biological, agricultural, natural sciences, or public health related coursework
- Applying control products for mosquito and flea control
- Sampling wetlands, ditches, storm drains and other areas for mosquito larvae
- Setting traps to monitor mosquito populations
- Mapping areas for helicopter and drone applications
- With training be able to to species level and submit to state lab for virus testing
- Safely operate a motor vehicle and have a valid driver’s license
- Safely apply control products, perform calculations, and maintain application records
- Ability to work alternative schedules including early mornings and evenings if required
- Be able to operate, with training, pesticide equipment including trunk mounted mosquito foggers, GIS devices, ATVs and other application equipment
- Walk considerable distances regularly
- Lift 50 lbs.

Enrollment in an accredited college or university in pursuit of a bachelor's degree is required; OR enrollment in a recognized master's degree program. Course work, prior or current, must include a minimum of 3 units pertinent to the operations of the hiring department.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATEDepending on area of assignment, a valid driver’s license may be required at the time of appointment.
Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy, new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation. Effective January 1, 2025, the $39.00 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and deducted automatically from the first paycheck. Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check, although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment.
This is not a classified position and is not covered by a collective bargaining unit.
“Intermittent hourly employee” means a person who is not employed on a fixed schedule and works on an “on-call” basis. Please be advised that upon appointment an Intermittent Hourly employee cannot work a regularly scheduled work schedule and must work less than 1040 hours in any fiscal year. Intermittent Hourly employees are “at will” employees and serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority.
Retired PERS (Public Employees’ Retirement System of Nevada) employees are responsible for contacting PERS to make sure that they do not go over the assigned PERS earnings limit for a fiscal year in order to retain retirement benefits. PERS phone number is to check for yearly updates.
Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.
